Over the past while we have seen photos on this site of all things Canada Crushed Stone, that once prominent company that was a landmark on the hillside overlooking Dundas. We've had images of locomotives, facilities and some related business trackage. This image is a photo of what was once the CCSL "mainline", the electrified track from the quarry itself by Highway 5, by which materials were transported to the breakdown operations overlooking the CN Dundas Sub. Loads one way, empties the other. The operations closed down in late 1973 I believe, and this image is from a year and a half later, and it wasn't long before all track was pulled up, leaving the area almost as pristine as it was to begin with.

  1. Never knew about this line. Really interesting stuff! What’s the story behind the gash in the foreground? Culvert removal?

  2. I don’t know for sure, Dave. You probably have it right as perhaps heavy rain caused debris to build up at this culvert. The next time I was up there, sections of track were taken up haphazardly, almost making one think it was done to discourage anyone from making a “go-cart” to ride the track with.
The whole layout and history surrounding the CCSL is fascinating. Especially the operation. They even used cut down motor cars from the former Hamilton, Grimsby & Beamsville Electric Rwy as locomotive power on the line.

  3. Really nice shot. Never seen any shots of the tracks intact. Sort of :)
I’ve only photographed the old road bridge which I believe has since been removed.
