It is coming up to 8 years (06/10/09) since the preserved CN "Northern" 4-8-4 #6213 has graced the Canadian National Exhibition grounds. The locomotive, which racked up more than a million miles in its' day, was donated to the City of Toronto back in 1960, and has spent most of its' retirement on display at the Stanley Barracks in the CNE grounds. As noted in the photo, this was the home of the Marine Museum (of Upper Canada). The Museum was moved out of the Barracks location in 2000, and eventually the steam engine was relocated to the Toronto Railway Heritage Centre, located at the old CPR John St Roundhouse, where it remains today.

  1. With any luck, she will raise steam again. It’s too bad that the last logical possibility to connect the roundhouse to the mainline, was built over years ago.

  2. Did you ever make it down to the portlands back in those days? I bet those shots would be popular on here, as there is much interest to this day about the last customers on that spur.

  3. No, Neil, I didn’t. I never lived in the city and there were so many other places in Ontariowe to visit.:o)

  4. Nice pic. Mr. M.. A mere 41 years ago – the year before the Blue Jays started playing.

  5. I was there during the labour day week end in 76,it was crowded.

  6. And the old Exhibition Stadium in the background! 6213 and the Haida were two of the attractions as a kid to the Ex for me.
Haida is in Hamilton. What happened to the Marine Museum? Barracks turned into condos? ;)

  7. A shout-out to Mr. Grant Kingsland and his crews for their tireless efforts to preserve the legacy of #6213.

Nice image, Mr. Mooney… this brings back a lot of powerful memories. Thank you, Sir!
