This photo has intrigued me since I acquired it a few years ago. It appears to show a Chessie System westbound train detouring over CN through Hamilton with a pair of GP40-2s (4051 and 4442). In the background, CN 7733 and 4380 "check out" the visitor.

Perhaps one of our Railpictures.ca members can shed some light on this movement and whether there were others like it.

  1. Second attempt at this – the reason C&O train CG-41 is detouring on the Grimsby, Dundas and Talbot Subdivisions, is the Welland canal tunnel flooded. This also caused NS to cancel or detour and some headaches for a few CN moves. I don’t know what CR did. This crew brought NI-42 eastbound via the same re-routing before taking rest for 41.

  2. I have located additional information regarding the tunnel flooding. It occurred on Saturday February 23, 1985 and the tunnel was re-opened at 0905 on Wednesday the 27th. BUCP departures from Montrose were cancelled on Saturday and Sunday, the 23rd and 24th. Both BUCP and CPBU were detoured over the Grimsby sub on February 25 and February 26, 1985. (Information from a CP telex from J G Beldham.)
