Lots of heavy work going on in the summer of 1977 on the main road into Timmins. Algonquin Blvd (E) or, if you prefer, Hwy 101 is undergoing an increased road clearance where the ONR line into town crosses over and to the station and shop/turntable a couple of blocks south. Apparently the good news would be that even if it is hot and dusty work, the local watering hole is not far away. ONR 1601 with a work train moves slowly into town. Last I heard this old GP was still around. The line into Timmins was pulled up in the mid 1980s.

  1. Very nice. I can picture this as I’ve been here, the right of way is still intact… I heard about the Timmins -> mainline shuttle, what a way to run a train..

  2. The Empire Hotel looks like your kind of place! :) And they had free parking! It’s interesting to see how the scene looks now on Google street view. There’s a parking lot built on the right of way next to the structure now.

  3. Lots of action in this scene. Very nice.

    The Timmins – Mainline shuttle? I’m curious…

  4. Looks like the line just ends West of Porcupine Lake at a hydro plant just past the Porcupine mine. Surprised about the Free Parking’ in 1977 in Timmins of all places! This aint Tarana 2018! ;)

  5. Jacob it was described to me by fans whom I know who went there in the 70′s or so that the ONR either ran the Northlander direct from Timmins for a while, but then changed to Cochrane but in lieu of direct Timmins service you could ride a train from Timmins to Porquis Jct, which consisted of a single engine, SGU and a single car. Basically a shuttle to meet the mainline train.

Then that shuttle ended sometime in the late 70′s or early 80′s by my guess.

  6. Yeah, Brad. Not like I couldn’t find a place to park in Northern Ontario. :o )
