RaiLink Southern Ontario took over the old CN Stuart St yard on Dec 15, 1997. So, this image is of the last of the CN presence leaving town the day before. The 'end of the line' resulted in CN 7027, 7127, 7280, slug280,and 1371 as well as a lot of freight cars being lifted by #449's CN 9406 and 9513 and being shuffled off to Niagara Falls to make it a clean start for RaiLink. It wasn't long, about a year when RailAmerica took over, and then Genesee Wyoming Canada moved in and after only 6 years the yard is rumoured to be reverting back to CN in mid-December 2018, 21 years less a day since this photo from the John St. N was taken.
On the right is the support structure for the old Hughson St bridge and in behind, James St N overpass. Left is part of the old CN Station complex and needless to say this area has completely undergone change since the West Harbour GO station has been constructed beyond James N bridge, on the left side.

  1. I’m glad you documented this. I have a number of old prints I took here of CN in my early days of photography. Not great shots but fond memories. I was very fond though of Railink and miss it too and it’s hand me down units. So many changes here today.

  2. When were the tracks removed from the old station?

  3. Not long afterwards. I worked downtown for two summers and I want to say by ’99 they were gone.

  4. If possible, please post you historic ‘old prints’ Marcus.

  5. Amazing shot! Was this when CN 448 / 449 were cancelled?

  6. Not sure, Brandon. But I’m guessing it happened when Niagara Falls yard was closed. (449/448 were MAC to NF and return)
