I rather doubt many 'cranks will be turned' looking at this, but I am posting an image of General Electric caboose GEX 80004 in hopes that someone can tell me something about it. How many did they have back then, where is this thing now? And I guess I wonder if anyone else has photos of it. The caboose was in Fort Erie, I guess as the security car along with a huge recessed flat that I marked as GEX 80003, but looking at the photo cannot see a number.
Anyone have any info? It would be appreciated.

  1. I enjoy a good Google search. GEX 80004 was built in 6/42 as LV 95018. What I think you’ll find interesting is that you may have seen this caboose again within the last few years, as it is now Upper Hudson River RR, the railroad that ran out of North Creek, NY before the Saratoga & North Creek. Also now defunct. I recall seeing Upper Hudson River RR cars in dark green with a red stripe stored in sidings around North Creek. Didn’t SNC restore a caboose in solid red? Perhaps it was this one. Any way, this caboose is likely stored in the bush up their somewhere. GEX 80003 was (is?) at 20 axle depressed centre flat car so this caboose must have accompanied it. The latest photo I found to the car was from 2006 so I’m not sure if it’s still around or not.

  2. I have some photos of this caboose taken in January 1977 at the CGE plant in Peterborough. It was part of a shipment for Hydro Quebec’s Gentilly II project. The shots were through the chain link fence and in to the sun, so I can’t read the number on the depressed flat. I presume it was the same one. CN 675001, an 8 axle depressed flat car was part of the shipment.

  3. Thanks, guys. The fact it might be GEX 80004 that is now UHRR 100 on the defunct S&NCRR is what brought this caboose to my attention. Yes, the flat car & caboose were together back in 1979, it was just that I had never heard of them since. My feeble attempt at trying to find the caboose on internet resulted in me finding a model of the item, but nothing else. Being computer moronic has its’ drawbacks.

  4. I just received an inventory of what is parked in Corinth NY, passenger cars, locos and freight cars. One is listed as SNC 1001, ” a faded red caboose”.
Good background info Rob, my first impression was that Arnold caught a former CNJ or LV caboose.
