Back in 2007, a quick visit to the Kitchener yard finds GEXR train 431 tied-down in the siding with the usual assortment of 4-axle power including; GP40’s 4019 and 4046 as well as GP38AC 3835.

In the almost 20 years since GEXR has operated the Guelph Subdivision, operators RailTex and RailAmerica have come and gone with G&W being the last official handler before the inevitable return of CN this November.

In the upcoming month, any photographs of G&W's orange painted units (or ex-SP tunnel motor) assigned to GEXR trains 431/432 will quickly become historic as they fade to the returning era of CN and a future that will no doubt be well documented in the months ahead.

  1. Awesome Shot Jay!! Yup I’ll sure miss the coloured GEXR units but being that Im one of those railfans who enjoys model railroading, I have all the time in the world to lay my hands on models of the GEXR units and looking at them I’ll always remember the GEXR era on the Guelph Sub!!

I myself am also hoping to be able to capture the final runs of 432/431 however their schedule might be thrown off at that time so it may be tricky! Fingers crossed, the stars will align

  2. Funny I got my G&W unit and then it was announced that CN would be taking over most of SOR and GEXR operations and Huron Central is on the chopping block unless they get Gov’t funding.

  3. Huron Central is always on the ‘chopping block’ and they will get funding.. it’s just a scare tactic until someone calls their bluff and all the traffic goes via CN instead.

  4. Nice Jason. Old school GEXR operations in Kitchener! 4019 was the engine I recall first seeing when I started photographing in 2000.
