On the evenings I was lucky enough to catch the westbound train out of Fort Erie, it was often close to dark when it left and photos were unattainable. Sometimes, though, the sun stayed above the trees long enough for me to grab an image shooting at 125th or so. This was one of those evenings. It is the very last gasp of sunlight here; the train has just cleared CN Duff as it leaves Fort Erie (see signals on the left background). I am standing by Pettit Rd crossing between the CN and the old CSX line, as N&W 3725 and 4142 accelerate west.

  1. Arnold…Arnold – to the left is Conrail with Chessie (C&O) trackage rights, not CSX ( still 9 years away) and never owned by anyone but MCRR/NYC/PC/CR up ’til the time you snapped the shutter !
And – 3725 has been the lone surviving F7 for nigh on 10 months at this point, and would make it’s very last revenue trip May 24/79 bringing train DN28 into Ft Erie and thereafter set aside for retirement ( donated to the Monticello IL museum and repainted/ renumbered to its original 1189A number).
So truly, 3725 is headed into it’s sunset…

  2. The CSX comment was a brain-fart, Bruce. I was thinking of the last train I saw on that line……in Chessie ‘Cat” paint. Me sorry.

  3. No pain, I gave you a Star anyway.

  4. Where was the TOFC – COFC traffic going – Dain City?

  5. Excellent picture.
    Good commentary from Bruce Mercer.
    Thanks both!

  6. Excellent stuff Arnold and Gang.
