For years and years the one thing that you could always count on when you drove along Edinburgh Road in Guelph was seeing one or more pole cars sitting in the small siding off the Guelph North Spur. These pole cars were unloaded onto a truck right there beside the street, by Guelph Utility Pole, which is actually owned and the cars are billed out as Stella-Jones. Stella-Jones is a large producer of industrial pressure-treated wood products and leases many railway cars for this type of service.

While I always would see these cars along Edinburgh Road either loaded or empty, photographing a train setting them off or being lifted proved difficult as the lighting was usually never favorable due to the location, as you are either shooting more or less into the sun or its backlit. I had only ever shot the Goderich-Exeter Railway setting-off here in 2008 and as mentioned the lighting was not great.

Flash forward almost 11 years and now CN was once again operating the Guelph North Spur. On a Sunday afternoon I heard some chatter on the scanner and soon discovered that L540 was finishing-up some switching in the yard with 4130 and 4761. The train soon departed and slowly trundled-up the North Guelph Spur with one single boxcar for a customer. Being an overcast afternoon actually worked-out for the better as I was able to photograph L540 passing a loaded pole car in the siding along Edinburgh Road. It wasn’t long after this photo was taken that I read that Guelph Utility Pole had switched over from CN to the Guelph Junction Railway. This traffic is now handled by Ontario Southland out of Guelph Junction and is reportedly unloaded on a team track still in the city.

As always, any additional information or corrections to the caption would be appreciated.

  1. Jason: Stella Jones has operations all over the place but I have heard that some of these poles were shipped from their Carseland, Alberta, plant just south of where I live. Six days a week, CP has road switcher # C46 ship the Carseland area. Between the two big grain elevators, two nitrogen plants & Stella Jones, there is always work for that crew.

  2. @robin lowrie- Thank you for the additional information.
