Ontario Southland Railway (OSR) SW1200RSm’s 1245 and 1249 are viewed having just departed Woodstock, Ontario and are passing the 1-mile approach signal to the Carew Diamond with CN’s Dundas Subdivision. The train is returning to Ingersoll on the St. Thomas Subdivision where it will switch in the small yard and eventually lift a pair of former CP Rail ballast hoppers in the town.

Birds take flight as CN GP9RM 7274 and GP9 Slug 274 are seen heading for another cut of cars to sort at CN's MacMillan Yard in Vaughan, Ontario just north of Toronto, seen from the Highway #7 overpass.

The remains of CN HR616 2105 are seen a day after being in the lead of train 272 when it was involved in a major rear-end collision on the Strathroy Subdivision. The unit was on the point of the eastbound train, when it rear-ended standing manifest 308 at Hyde Park. In turn, the force of the impact pushed train 308 into the rear of train 223, another standing freight which was stopped ahead of it. The collision was enough to derail both 2105 and second unit, LMSX C40-8W 723. The locomotives suffered heavy damage, with 2105 bearing the worst of it. Fortunately, the crews involved escaped with non-life threatening injuries. The LMSX lessor would be repaired, however 2105 was subsequently retired on October 26, 1995 after it was determined the damage was too extensive and it would be too costly to repair the aging locomotive.

Here in this photo, looking west from the Hyde Park Road overpass in London, the derailment cleanup was proceeding. Both the HR616 and LMSX Dash 8-40W 723 are viewed as well as several of the derailed freight cars. The two people in the field taking photos of 2105 are myself and a friend. I didn’t realize that my dad had gotten us in a few of his photos until I scanned the negatives.

In the end, the Transportation Safety Board eventually had determined that the engineer of train 272 had missed a restrictive signal indication west of Hyde Park due to fatigue and was ultimately unable to completely stop as his train approached and struck the stopped 308.

Spring has sprung as CN L568 rolls westbound, approaching Road 106, just east of Shakespeare, Ontario as it heads to Stratford and customers further west. Powering the short train are GTW 6420, BNSF 2926 and BNSF 2090, which is a consist that drew many railfans to the Guelph Subdivision, including several from the U.S.

Veteran CP M-630 4572 is viewed trailing on train 515 in Killean siding in Galt, Ontario waiting for a meet with two eastbound’s. Built in 1969 by MLW, the aging locomotive had been retired in December 1993, then un-retired during May 1994 as CP found itself increasingly power short. Unknown to me at the time of the photo, was that 4572 only had less than three weeks left in service before it was ultimately retired for good on April 18, 1995, at St. Luc yard in Montreal, Quebec.

CP train 515 waits in Killean siding in Galt, Ontario as the last cars of the second of two eastbound’s rolls by the windows of SOO Line SD40-2 6617. The eastbound was powered by SD40-2 5580, HLCX GP38AC 3676 and GP9u 8248. Following the meet, train 515 with SOO Line SD40-2 6617, SD40-2 5776 and M-630 4572, would slowly roll out of the siding to Galt, where it would also stop to lift loaded auto racks in the bustling yard.

On an Easter weekend more than thirty years ago now, a colorful consist waits to depart CP’s Toronto Yard diesel shop tracks. The unit’s included; VIA Rail F40PH-2 6457, HLCX GP40-3 4407, C-424 4227 and M-636 4721. At the time, CP Rail was leasing nine F40PH-2’s from VIA Rail to assist with their motive power shortage. They were mainly used on local jobs as well as mainline 900 series trains that stayed within the province. HLCX 4407 was ex-HLCX 654, ex-Amtrak 654, ex-Kyle Railroad 3116, ex-Conrail 3083 and nee-PC/NYC 3083.

Bearing the evidence of a violent collision the day prior, CN HR616 2105 is pictured situated beside Mile 4 of the Strathroy Subdivision at CN Hyde Park in London, Ontario. So the story goes, during the early morning hours of February 16, 1995, the unit was on the point of eastbound train 272, when it rear-ended the tail-end of standing train 308 at Hyde Park. In turn, the force of the impact pushed train 308 into the rear of train 223, which was another standing freight that was stopped ahead of it. The force of the collision was enough to derail both 2105 and second unit, LMSX C40-8 723. Fortunately, all the crews involved escaped with non-life-threatening injuries, however the crew of 272 did receive injures due to the accident. Both the locomotives on 272 suffered heavy damage, with 2105 bearing the worst of it.

We had visited the wreck scene the following day after the Strathroy Subdivision had been re-opened for traffic. The remains of the damaged freight cars and 2105 were situated beside the line and against an adjoining field. We took some photos from the Hyde Park Road overpass, then a friend and I as well as another London area railfan walked into the field to photograph 2105. Its heavily damaged frame was situated pushed up against a fence line while in the background, big cranes were preparing to attach to 2105 and would work through the evening to re-rail the big HR616.

In the time following the derailment, the LMSX lessor would go on to be repaired, however 2105 was subsequently retired on October 26, 1995 after it was determined the damage was too extensive and it would be too costly to repair the aging unit. The Transportation Safety Board later established that due to crew fatigue, the locomotive engineer of train 272 went by a restrictive signal west of Hyde Park and was unable to stop his train as it approached stopped 308’s tail-end. Also, the fields where we were to take the photos of 2105 are now long gone and are filled with housing developments.

An eastbound CP train is viewed approaching the West Toronto diamonds on the North Toronto Subdivision with quite a colorful consist heading to CP’s Toronto Yard. The consist included; SD40-2 5916, HATX GP40-2 501, HATX GP40-2 503, HATX GP38AC 175 and GP9u 8246. HATX 501 and HATX 503 would later go on to be acquired by CP through trades during 1999 and would become CP 4650 and 4651.

A CP westbound train is viewed waiting to depart Lambton Yard near West Toronto, Ontario with a trio of SD40-2’s that included; 5736, 672 and SOO Line 788. It wasn’t known if this train continued west on the Galt Subdivision or headed onto CN’s Oakville Subdivision to Hamilton. CP 672 was former KCS 672 and would later go on to become CP 5417 and painted in the duel flags scheme.

So, the story goes on March 19, 1995 CN had locked out 10,000 workers and laid off 1,200 during a Canada wide rail strike that also heavily impacted commuter and passenger service. At the time, Canadian Pacific had more than 7200 employees on strike who had utilized non-union managers and employees to continue moving some freight over the duration of the strike. The lengthy work stoppage by unions of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees and the Canadian Auto Workers was mainly over a job security clause that the companies had wanted to water down. While the dispute had began earlier in the month, it came fully to a head during the March 18-19 weekend. It wasn’t until March 27, when after a rare weekend session that Canadian Parliament had passed a bill to end the strike that had crippled the country’s transportation network for more than a week.

On the last day before the strike, we were out around Milton on the Halton Subdivision trying to photograph the final moves before the work stoppage began the next day after midnight. That afternoon, 2nd 392 arrived at Mansewood where the crew was instructed to leave their train and get into a taxi for home. Later that afternoon, CN 392 was told to stop at Mansewood and lift 2nd 392’s units only and continue to MacMillan Yard. It would be assumed that CN had wanted all the power back in Toronto with the risk of a pending strike just hours away. Here CN 392 is viewed at Mansewood ready to head east with an impressive consist that included; LMS 718, 5362, 6012, 9629, 5346, 6109, 5365, LMS 729, 5304 and 5336. My notes showed they departed at 16:50 and we did photograph it again at Mile 30.

CN L568 approaches the Duke Street crossing in Kitchener, Ontario as it heads west to Stratford light power with BNSF 2090 and CN 4936. As of March 2025, BNSF GP38-2 2090 was still in it’s BNSF paint and operating in Ontario on CN.

CN train 422 sits in the siding at Kitchener, Ontario on the Guelph Subdivision waiting on a new crew with quite the consist. It included; SD40’s 5035, 5089, GP9RM 7031, SW1200RSm’s 7309, 7314 and 7104. All the four-axle units were lifted at London for the trip back to MacMillan Yard. Thankfully at the time, I was on my March break from high school and was able to get some photos, as 422 typically went east through Kitchener during the night or early morning hours.

A VIA Rail service attendant clears snow from an LRC coach before a platform of passenger’s board VIA Rail train 84 at the Kitchener, Ontario station. While the winter of 2024, paled in comparison to this year’s winter there were still some snowy days to contend with.

VIA Rail F40PH-2 6452 with CP Rail RS18u’s 1835 and 1815 are viewed in between assignments at the CP Toronto yard diesel shop. At the time, CP Rail was leasing nine F40PH-2’s from VIA Rail to assist with their motive power shortage. They were mainly used on local jobs as well as mainline 900 series trains that stayed within the province.

On January 9, 1995 the CN 15:30 Kitchener Job moved the very first piece of Waterloo-St. Jacobs Railway equipment on the Waterloo Spur to St. Jacobs, Ontario where it would be set-off. The car was former CN track geometry car #15000 and was built by CC&F in 1923 as sleeper car #1570- “Jellicoe.” It featured 12 sleeper sections and one drawing room and was later reduced in 1948 to 8 sections and one drawing room as well as renumbered 1819, however still retained the name “Jellicoe.” In July 1973, CN converted it into a track geometry car.

Here the car is viewed sitting in St. Jacobs a few weeks after arriving showing its newly applied WJXX lettering. At this point, WSJR’s planned excursion service was still over two years away from commencing operations on the spur during summer 1997. More than 30 years later, today the car still calls the Waterloo Spur home, now in the employ of the Waterloo Central Railway.

When the calendars were flipped to 1995, CP Rail had 163 units leased operating through Canada and the US to assist with their motive power constraints. At the time, my Branchline magazine from that month showed there were nine VIA Rail F40PH-2’s on lease plus SD40-2’s from Algoma Central and BC Rail. As well as a myriad of other four and six axle power from various leasing companies. By far, Helm Leasing had the most units leased by CP, with Illinois Central, Conrail Leasing, GATX Leasing, Generation II Leasing and Precision National providing many as well. Railfans had dubbed them “rent-a-wrecks” and to many it was reminiscent of the previous great CP 1970’s lease fleet. Not to be overlooked, the preceding spring CP had re-activated 33 big MLW’s from retirement, which included a mix of C-630M’s, M-630’s and M-636’s. By winter 1995, only 27 remained active, some of which had their cab windows boarded over as they were mainly trailing units only. As each month went by in 1995, the groups numbers would shrink less and less as they were retired following major failures. Also, by 1995 CP had a group of rebuilt SD40-2’s on order from Morrison–Knudsen as well as the railway’s first order of GE locomotives ever, in the form of 83 new AC4400CW’s. The MK units were due for a spring arrival and the GE’s were expected in late summer. Additionally, the railway would go on to purchase several yellow GATX SD40-2’s that they were leasing. All of these acquisitions would ultimately see all the Big M’s retired by the end of August.

Here, during a frigid morning CP SD40 5506 and M-630 4573 (the last M-630 in the number series) are viewed preparing to depart the Toronto yard diesel shop tracks for possibly an eastbound train on the Belleville Subdivision. On August 23, 1995 CP officially retired 4573 and later sold it to the Minnesota Commercial Railroad in 1996 where it became MNNR #73. Many years later it was sold to the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad, becoming WNYP #631.
