Time machines don’t exist. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t feel like you’re in one. Three decades ago, I was never able to photograph CN 421 passing the original CN Baden sign in the town of Baden on the Guelph Subdivision. Those trains would have been powered on many evenings by GP40-2L(W)’s as they were leading many of the 421’s I photographed in Kitchener during 1993. <br> Flash-forward almost 30 years later and although times have changed, they can also still seem to remain exactly the same. Here, now downgraded to local service, CN GP40-2L(W) 9416 leads CN L568 by the immaculately modern CN Baden sign on a gorgeous winter’s afternoon.

CSX train R321 with CSX C40-8W’s 7737 and 7694 with C&O caboose 904125 are paused by the iconic former CASO station in St. Thomas, Ontario during a humid August 1993 day. The train met CSX R320, much to the delight of those attending the weekend St. Thomas railway day's festivities.

During a gorgeous spring day, VIA Rail 688 gleams in the sunshine as it heads east through the village of Baden, Ontario on the CN Guelph Subdivision. This was the first run of a new VIA Venture train-set over the line, as it tested corridor stations/ platforms across Southern Ontario.

With the conductor now on board, CN 421 is seen returning to the mainline at the Kitchener, Ontario yard after making a 10 car lift with 9677 and 2109. CN 9677 had been re-painted into the CNNA scheme within the past year and the big HR616's were regular visitors to the line on trains 421/422 back during this era. June 4, 1993.

On July 17, 1993 my dad and I went to London for the first time to railfan. It was a Saturday and both CN and CP were fairly active that morning and afternoon according to my notes. Here, the power for CN train 381 is seen awaiting a fresh crew at London East with 9514, 5309 and 9581. At the time, 381 operated from Toronto to Windsor, and 380 operated from Windsor to Toronto with both trains changing crews in London.

CN L542 with GP9RM’s 7038 and 7081 have just completed their set-off at Hunt’s Logistics in Cambridge, Ontario on the Fergus Spur and will soon end their day at the Eagle Street crossing. As of fall 2022, CN no longer keeps L542 at the Cambridge outpost as it is now based out of Kitchener.

CN 562 with GP9RM’s 7036 and 7035 head west under the original Inksetter Road bridge at Copetown, Ontario on the Dundas Subdivision. At the time, this local originated at Hamilton’s Stuart Street Yard and would often head west to the Paris pit during Sunday’s. Caboose 79707 was on the tail-end on this day.

In spring 1993, my good friend’s family invited me to Goderich, Ontario for a day trip. They were going to tour the old town jail and go for lunch. While on the way I had one request and that was to make a stop at the former CN station and yard. By that time, the RailTex-owned Goderich-Exeter Railway was just one year old having started operations on the Goderich and Exeter Subdivisions in April 1992. I had seen photos of the new shortline in magazines and on the news over the previous year, so I certainly wanted to pay them a visit while in town that afternoon. <br> Once we arrived at the station, I could see the three former Cartier Railway GP9’s gathered by the building. It was a Sunday, so they were not working, however I was able to get some photos. The yard was full of CN cylindrical hoppers for the salt mine in town and there were empty bulkhead cars waiting to be loaded with new road graders from the nearby Champion facility. One year in the books and all signs were positive for Canada’s newest shortline. Here, GEXR 179 and 180 bask in the spring sun in front of the Goderich station with their cream and green paint still looking quite sharp. GP9 177 was situated a little further up on the same track.

An Extra CP Wolverton Job with 3134, 3117 and 3045 are switching the Growmark (FS Partners) facility track in Ayr, Ontario on the Ayr Pit Spur during a winter afternoon. This track once again started seeing service the year prior.

On this Thursday evening I had biked down to the Kitchener yard and saw that the CN 15:30 Job was nowhere to be found. They were likely still down the Huron Park Spur at the Budd Plant doing their work, so I waited at the yard for hopefully 421 from MacMillan yard to arrive. In due course a headlight appeared to the east and it became clear that in keeping with routine it was 421 and it was taking the siding. With its pending lift of new loaded car frames still on the Huron Park Spur and the eastbound International coming soon, the RTC had no choice but to put 9473 west in the hole at Kitchener. <br> I waited at Lancaster Street and soon enough 421 slowly rolled to a stop so the conductor could uncouple their set-off from the train. I snapped a photo and could see they had on four units tonight and they had quite a long train as well. While taking it all in I saw the engineer wave at me and lean out. “Hey, you want to go for a ride? We’re going to be here for a while.” I nodded “yes” and parked my bike by the laundromat building beside the yard. The engineer pointed to the front and I climbed aboard the GP40-2L(W). Walking-up into the cab and through all the doors, the first thing I realized was how much bigger the inside was compared to GP9RM 4134 that Dennis Fleet let me up in three weeks prior. “You can sit down over there,” he said pointing to the conductor’s seat. He slowly inched the train ahead to the crossing and waited until the gates came before throttling-up 9473 ahead to clear the switch for the conductor. As we crossed Lancaster Street I remember looking down at the stopped traffic thinking how the crew could see everything from up here and just being in general awe of what was happening. I asked the engineer if I could take a couple photos from the cab and we briefly talked. In no time at all we had reversed the set-off into the yard. While we waited for the conductor to finish uncoupling the engineer asked “you want to take over for a minute for this next move?” I don’t honestly remember my response but in a matter of seconds I was sitting in his seat in front of 9473’s controls. With the engineer standing behind me giving me instructions I slowly notched the consist ahead after the conductor had climbed aboard the trailing unit. Once we got to the crossing, he took back over for their final move to clear the power for the 15:30 Kitchener Job, which was getting closer to arriving with their lift. Once we had rolled to a stop he asked, “do you want a picture of you sitting in my chair?” I handed him my camera and he climbed down to get a photo of me waving from the cab. He climbed back-up and gave me back my camera with me giving him a big thank you as I headed back to my waiting bike. The crew headed-over to the Dairy Queen, which was next-door to the laundromat, as they still had some time on their hands. I remember biking home later that evening thinking that I was fortunate that the engineer took that photo because my dad was never going to believe what had just happened when I tell him the story. All I can say is that the 1990’s were awesome.

The sun is just dipping below the horizon as the CN 15:30 Kitchener Job with GP9RM 4134 is returning from Elmira, Ontario on the Waterloo Spur. The crew had lifted two CN cylindrical hoppers from Nutrite in Elmira and is viewed approaching John Street in Waterloo returning to Kitchener during a spring evening.

With their train assembled, engineer Dennis Fleet waits to depart the Kitchener yard for Elmira, Ontario with CN 4134, three hoppers and the crew’s caboose on the tail-end. I would bike towards Waterloo following the train en route along the Waterloo Spur, hoping to catch it at a crossing or two before heading for home.

CN L568 with 4125, 4130 and 9416 leads a lengthy train as it heads down the Huron Park Spur approaching the Stirling Avenue bridge in Kitchener. The train was going to the interchange with Canadian Pacific at South Junction. March 20, 2022.

As the winter slowly gives way to spring, Waterloo Central Railway 1012, former CN 1437, nee-CN 1012, is viewed during its inaugural run after repainting on a promotional excursion north of St. Jacobs, Ontario at Mile 9.87 of the Waterloo Spur at Scotch Line Road.
