Amtrak GP40TC 199 is pictured during its station stop at the Aldershot, Ontario station on the CN Oakville Subdivision. This unit was originally built in December 1966 as CN 607 and later became GO Transit 607 upon the formation of the commuter agency during spring 1967.

During a hot summer evening a westbound CP train is seen in the siding at Orrs Lake, Ontario on the Galt Subdivision preparing to meet an eastbound. This consist was quite wild even by mid-90’s standards as it included GP38-2 3030, M-636 4721 and GP35 5012. While seeing a big MLW still in operation was awesome, which had now been given a blanked-over cab during reactivation at St-Luc, the real draw was GP35 5012. At the time, the entire fleet of CP GP35’s were assigned to Western Canada and one straying this far east was very un-common. Even in all my trips to CP’s Toronto Yard diesel shop, I never photographed or saw another one after this.

M-636 4721 ran for almost one more year before it was “re-retired” on July 5, 1995. While on August 2 ,1996 GP35 5012 was released from CP’s Weston Shops after conversion to control cab-daughter slug 1125. It was mated with GP38-2 ‘mother’ 3035 and assigned to Winnipeg. It was ultimately retired in October 2012.

It’s an absolute stunner of a summer day as Goderich-Exeter Railway train 581 is observed completing its switching duties at the picturesque Goderich, Ontario harbor. Powered by veteran GP38-2’s RLHH 2111 and HESR 3510, the train made two runs down to the harbor on this afternoon to lift and set-off sizeable cuts of salt hoppers. While it once ran daily, GEXR 581 is now operating as required to Goderich from Stratford on the Goderich Subdivision.

Just off the assembly line, Southern Pacific SD70M 9803 is viewed gleaming fresh as its being lifted by a westbound at CP’s Quebec Street yard in London, Ontario. SP 9803 was part of a 25 unit order that was manufactured at GMDD’s London plant during June-August 1994. Also coupled to the SP unit was Burlington Northern SD70MAC 9460, which left the GMDD facility in primer for the US.

Long stored CP 402851, which is a wooden cab Jordan spreader with ice cutters is pictured sitting in the CP yard at Smiths Falls, Ontario. During the 90's photos show that this spreader spent a significant time in the same location in Smiths Falls. It's final disposition is unknown, unless someone on this site has information on it's eventually status.

An eastbound VIA Rail train is pictured slowing for its station stop at Brockville, Ontario on the CN Kingston Subdivision. The train was heading to Montreal, Quebec and was powered by LRC-2 6903.

Goderich-Exeter Railway 581 is seen switching out their cars during a humid summer afternoon. The train was powered by HESR 3510 and RLHH 2111 and had arrived earlier with over 20 cars from Stratford. Also, that day the crew had set-off newly re-painted GEXR GP15-1 1533 by the shop.

CN M-420(W) 3578, M-636 2314 and SD40 5071 lead a westbound over the Highway 403 bridge as it begins its trip over the CN Dundas Subdivision at Hamilton West, Ontario.

During a hazy summer evening, CN GP9RM 4100 waits for its next assignment at Kitchener, Ontario, along with caboose 79401. Over the years, 4100 was assigned to Kitchener on several occasions, with this being the first time I ever photographed it there.

Now, more than 30 years later and 4100 is currently freshly re-painted and re-lettered LDSX 4100 for GIO Rail. The unit was completed at the Sarnia, Ontario based Lambton Diesel Specialists shop. This unit, along with a pair of former IC SW14’s had been acquired by LDS during 2023 after languishing stored unserviceable in the Niagara/ Welland area for sometime. As of July 12, LDSX 4100 was still observed at the LDS shop in Sarnia awaiting its first assignment on GIO Rail.

Newly built Orinoco Mining SD38-2TC 1048 is seen at CN’s MacMillan Yard in Vaughan, Ontario. The unit was on route from the GMDD plant in London to the AMF facility in Montreal, Quebec for contract painting. This was a mining railroad in Venezuela, that had eight units manufactured and painted in Canada, which were loaded on a ship in Halifax during June of that year to reach their destination.

During a spring evening, the shadows are growing long as the westbound Road Railer (Train 529) with GP38-2 3123 leading is viewed crossing Clyde Road on the Galt Subdivision. The train is approaching the east siding switch at Killean, which at that time was still used regularly for meets.

CN caboose 79783 sits amongst the ever-growing weeds and other brush at CN’s Stuart Street Yard in Hamilton, Ontario. This caboose and some other aging equipment had sat stored here behind the shop for many years.

HATX GP40-2 515 is seen with CP GP9u 8247 at CP’s Toronto Yard preparing to head to the diesel shop. At the time, CP had a large group of Helm Financial Corporation units leased as part of their rapidly expanding mid-90’s lease fleet. GP40-2 515, was former Boston & Maine 311, which later went on to become Ontario Northland Railway 2200 in 2005.

An evening thunderstorm has just cleared the Denfield Road bridge area at Hyde Park, Ontario and its remnants produced a rainbow over the CN Strathroy Subdivision as it continued to move into London. The timing was impeccable as VIA Rail #75 with 6405 is viewed rounding the curve approaching the bridge with several photographers there to capture the moment.

CN GP9RM 4132 leads the 15:30 Kitchener Job by the old St. Jacobs Farmers Market stock pens approaching King Street in north Waterloo, Ontario. The job has one tank car for Sulco in Elmira on the Waterloo Spur.

It’s been more than three decades since I photographed CN 7500 working the hump at MacMillan Yard in Vaughan, Ontario. Now in 2024, those assignments are held by SD40u’s and SD40-2(W)’s, which would have been busy operating on priority mainline trains back in 1994. Man, how the times have changed during a pleasant June evening as SD40u 6020, GP9 Slug 250 and SD40-2(W) 5298 are viewed approaching Rutherford Road with another cut of cars to be sorted over the hump at MacMillan Yard.
