A trio of trains are parked just east of Belleville Yard (M37231 07, M30631 06, and M37631 06, all have since been given new ID's) and have been stuck here over two weeks now due to a protest on CN's main line along Tyendinaga Mohawk territory, which has seen both freight and passenger trains unable to use CN's busy Kingston Sub at a point a bit east of here.

  1. It looks like the 2279 has been parked the longest. It has the rustiest rails in front of it. :-)

  2. How are they able to get these refueled ??

  3. Was wondering that myself. A road parallels the tracks here so maybe they can get a hose far enough.

  4. Hey guys. They will only park the units where they can be refuelled easily. Since this location is the change off point it is fairly easy to get the fuel trucks close to the tracks from the road. Even though all these units are equipped with “Smart Start” they could still run out of fuel so i assume that the fuel levels are checked on a regular basis. Where fuel trucks can not get to ther power, the trains are chained to the rails as per Transport Canada and left on the main. McCowans on the York Sub has a train tied down there for the last 2 weeks with no power.
When the trains do get moving again they will have speed restrictions due to the rail rust. Apparently, the rust can affect the signal and crossing circuits

  5. It would be cool to see these start out.

  6. They didn’t park these trains here for fuel truck access. They parked them here because (a) they couldn’t go any farther and (b) it is a very convenient spot where they won’t be blocking crossings and (c) it’s an easy spot to get a crew off and on. You can’t tell me that when CN parked these trains here that they knew this was going to last longer than 2 weeks. The thought of these trains running out of fuel probably didn’t even cross their minds until a few days ago.

  7. Hence my original question

  8. @mercer… no doubt.

If they all ran out of fuel and I was in charge, I’d order up an extra yard crew to hop on the Belleville roadswitcher power, or a unit on one of the 8 trains at Belleville that did have power and their 8 hour day would be to tie all of the trains down, take off all of the power off of the trains and bring them into the yard for fuel. Once full take them back out to their respective trains.

For whatever it’s worth, currently the 5639 shows 3054gal, 2279 shows 1403gal (getting low) and the 8021 shows 2510gal.

  9. @Tim. I did not say that was the specific reason the trains were parked there. A) I know very well that the trains were parked there because of the blockade. B) The exact spot where these trains are parked was an access to a farmers crossing and that CN had to move the crossing further to not block access to the crossing and it gave the company much longer trackage to do crew change offs without blocking the plant behind them at Moira. C)I have changed off there many times in the past and yes CN has fueled locomotives there when needed.
Of course CN did not know the blockade would last that long and this was the best spot to leave the trains.

  10. @Tim. It is a good thing that you are not in charge. Obviously you have no idea how many brakes would have to be put on each of the trains as per Transport Canada regulations. Then spend the day ferrying power to the yard to fuel the power and bring it back to each train? Talk about unnecessary. Why would CN ever need to do that when a fuel truck can fill all the units at the east end of Belleville without removing power of the trains?

  11. @engineerblahblah… spoken like a true lazy train crew! I knew I should’ve bit my tongue before I posted that one knowing full well I’d get a holy-er than thou response – like usual. Bruce asked how they would fill them up, and I provided an option.

The trains are already tied down as per Transport Canada rules. I’m surprised there aren’t derails there after this long. Out west we have to put derails on either end of staged trains when they are tied down for more than 2 days on the mainline.

Anywho, having not been to Belleville since the major upgrades, I have no idea what kind of access is there at the east end. Hopefully the truck has a long hose to reach all of those trains… even though this is a pointless battle due to the fact that the trains have more than enough fuel.

  12. @TimStevens.blahblah? How old are you man? Lighten up dude. “spoken like a true lazy train crew” And please do not disparage my livelihood as I did NOT bring in your job with CN to attack you, or call you a lazy maintainer. That being said. I would stack up the jobs of running trades against your job anyday. Holier than tho? Listen Tim, I commented on the photo because this is my backyard and have changed off with outbound crews there hundreds of times.
You are indeed entitled to your opinion as are any of us on this site, but we should be civil, even if we disagree.
As per Transport Canada rule, it depends on if there is power attached to the train or if its just a cut of cars which require the train to be chained to the rails and derails put in place if I remember correctly.
Anywho, we can agree to disagree :-)

BTW, congrats on your photo in the annual CN calendar. Fantastic as usual!

  13. Whoa ????

    Truly unique picture!
