The distant cry of a pair of veteran EMD prime movers at full throttle can be heard through the open car window as I approach the Grand River bridge in Kitchener's east end, soon a pair of worn GP9RM'S storm over the bridge before I can even get the camera out of its bag. Looking at my two young boys in the back seat there are no need for words as the big smiles say it all. Soon we find ourselves going full speed in the opposite direction. I have to admit I love these rebuilt Geeps. CN has definitely gotten it's money's worth out of them and no other Class One railroad has gotten the mileage out of GP9's like CN, after all they have been rolling for their original owner for well over half a century. We finally get ahead of the train when we reached Mosborough but still only had seconds to spare. In the image here the two Geeps have a short train in tow as they pass a short row of surviving line side telephone poles, just ahead the remnants of the one time short siding located here, which can still be found in the weeds severed from the main. I'm sure as time allows Metrolinx will eliminate both.

  1. When I lived in Redwater during the 80′s, my boys were youngsters. They had to have their own toy cameras so they could stand with Dad on the road and take photos too. :-)

    What’s amazing is the fact that it is 2020 and you’re taking pictures of the same engines as I did. They are just a little modified now (low noses). Very nice photo.

  2. Larry these engines are amazing, EMD should be proud. Years ago Trains had an article with a bunch of them assigned to the NAR I believe. It’s amazing too how many are still finding their way to shortlines. You would think they would be completely worn out.

  3. Nice photo Marcus. I bet that sounded good at track speed. Also this would have been CN L540.
