I was having a look through the slide collection and found this beauty. I previously posted a photo of GMD-1's pulling a long string of grain boxes up this hill. The boxes here are lead by the 4607 (still in NAR paint) and the 4267. They are hauling a somewhat longer train. The units have gone 10 to 15 car lengths past me and there is no sign of the caboose way down at the corner in the photo. In my GMD-1 picture, the caboose had entered that far corner by this time. Doing a quick measure on Google Earth, there is approx. 1.3km of box cars in this photo. That's a lot of peddling the boys will be doing tonight. Time of photo is early evening.

  1. Truly unique truly Canadian, great pic!

  2. Thanks for your comment. :-)
It sure does make you wonder where all the gov’t hoppers were. It will have taken some effort to find the empty grain boxes and then get a string like this put together.

  3. The famed Manitoba “Buffalo Boxcars”, probably the last grain boxcar fleet in service (they lasted into the mid-1990′s). The last of CP’s lasted about that long too, around the time both railways were either abandoning or upgrading the last of their light rail branchlines on the prairies to handle the heavier covered hoppers.

  4. Great scene Seth B.

Some of those “Buffalo Boxcars” were scrapped at the “S Yard” in MacMillan Yard in Toronto during the mid-1990′s.

  5. Thanks everyone for the comments and the many views. One of the “Last Hurrahs” of the once very common grain box.
