Decided to offer this image up, as it appears BUDD cars are making the news these days. The sun is low and the angle extreme, but the light off the sides of the Budds gives this image some appeal.
Hard to imagine why such efficient looking transportation would go the way of the dodo. A real shame. This run, a Monday-Friday commuter from down in Toronto to Stouffville is patronized well enough that it requires four Budds on the journey. It looks to me later than the 1800 hrs scheduled stop at Unionville 20 miles into the northward run, but then there are a lot of buildings around to block the low sun. Power consists of CN 6351, 6001, 6006 and 6401.

  1. I used to ride my bike to the Agincourt station to watch this go by in the late 1970′s. It was so busy that there were routinely standees in the baggage section that would get off at Agincourt.

  2. I makes you wonder where all the people have gone. Perhaps millions upon millions of dollars spent for new transit to do exactly what the Budds did so faithfully ?

  3. Great shot, Arnold, but I’m confused by your comment – this line now supports a dozen GO trains a day – surely they do a lot more than what 4 Budd cars once a day could do? The people are on the GO!

  4. Thought of that after…I guess I was more preoccupied as to why we insist on big hulking GO trains in areas where Budd-style vehicles would do.
Not on that line though. :o ) Was thinking of Niagara. Thats what happens when I start ‘thinking’ early before finishing coffee.

  5. Fully agree the Niagara “commuter” GO train was not a success when it ran, but the weekend “excursion” GO trains have been popular – I rode one that was standing room only!
