Railpictures.ca - Jacob Patterson Photo: While taking a drive through Grey County I figured I’d make a quick stop at the old Harriston train station. Service to Harriston began on the Wellington, Grey & Bruce Railway (under Great Western ownership) in 1871, later of course taken over by the GTR and finally CNR. The exact date of construction of this station is listed differently, 1888 on the town website, 1904 on the plaque out front, circa 1905 in other sources, nonetheless it has aged well being in the care of the community as a senior’s centre with a shuffleboard court (white fence at left) and can be rented for meetings and such. The interior has been restored and it was repainted in 2013 from its previous green scheme. You must think that if a small community like Harriston can take such good care and exhibit such concern for their once-centre-of-town railroad station that other communities could not do the same. I’m really impressed with this image and the condition of the structure. I say “hats off” to the town for their community pride.
