One of the Bayview favourites we watched for back in the day was the daily run of the "Pulp Train". This afternoon train out of Mac Yard destined for Niagara had a considerable amount of logs up front for the Thorold Pulp and Paper facility in Thorold South. Hard to imagine once upon a time an operation so busy that they took 10-20 carloads a day and now.....the place is closed up and done.
The scene here is the big trestle over Jordan Harbour; and CN 2313 with 2030 are moving right along.

  1. Awesome photo AW..bringing back more memories for me. Hopefully Hunters’s single tracking of the Grimbsy Sub from Nelles Rd to Jordan will be for naught and Metrolinx will be putting back the rails across this bridge.

  2. That single tracking seems asinine, but what do I know. It will need to be reinstated if GO ever gets down this way. Typical politicians all got together for a photo-op (and a paid day wasted)years before anything ever gets accomplished. Glad your memory vault opened, even if just for one more photo.

  3. I don’t think it was assinine, after all CN did reduce the freights from 6 each way to basically, one. Metrolinx or VIA could have paid to maintain the 2′nd track but no one wanted to or were given the choice…

    Metrolinx will put it back in due time though, as they do not care for any delays. Pity the seaway, it really does get in the way. But since the Feeder canal predated the railway… the feds likely claim priority.

  4. I realize things are different with the railroads; but living by this section of track it seemed trains were always waiting……..

  5. I will have to respectfully disagree with Stephen. The removal of the second track was asinine! Typical EHH move like he did with IC and of course the disaster that is the Strathroy Sub. EHH trying to make his mark. The reason being that CN had to pay taxes on any tracks they owned, used or not. The tracks were pulled up way before the reduction of freight service. What is done, is done. If Metrolinx does acquire the entire Grimbsy Sub it will be a VERY expensive undertaking as the entire subdivision will need to be rebuilt from the sub ballast up! The Grimbsy Sub is the ONLY sub that I know where the speed between passenger (65mph) and freight (60mph) is 5 mph. Thats just sad. AS for the Seaway, I have heard all types of plans to get trains over it, but nothing feasible. Metrolinx can’t run a on time service with the delays that a ship in the canal would cause. I guess we will see what the future holds!

  6. My opinion on this was only formed because I do not understand the benefits of waiting. When AMTK and two VIAs ran, there was always conflicts along this stretch.
    As far as the ship canal goes; I have seen boats out there on the lake for more than a couple of days……..there must be a way to keep the bridge in the down position for 2 hours in the morning and 2 at night.
    A tunnel on the Grimsby is pretty well out of the question.

  7. I am not sure there are benefits in waiting my friend, but you know as well as I do that passenger service has always taken a back seat to freight trains :-( VIA unlike GO does not have the penalties built in to their contracts. If a GO train is late by 15 min everyone get a refund I am told?
    A tunnel definitely won’t be happening.
    I thought the same thing that you did about an operating window in the morning and evening rush hour where ships wait, but I think Metrolinx wants regular service on that line which means no delays.
    The CP diamond at Davenport is notorious for major delays to Union station in the morning and I saw it first hand 2 weeks ago when the first VIA train to Vancouver in over a year took a 20 min “hit” waiting for a CP train to clear. Not sure what the solution will be at the Seaway

  8. Will we still be above ground by the time there is regular all day service? I only know I will be because I will be ash in the ballast..somewhere.:o)

  9. Phil You are right, the line was much busier in 2000 when the track was taken out, plus had extra VIA trains that don’t run now. Truth is, they could have waited then ripped it up, but yes, EHH loves to make his mark… that I’ll never understand… as I am not a railroader.

    I suppose in hindsight it was the right decision for CN in the long term, but the wrong decision for what Metrolinx will want to do for the line. I don’t think CN misses the 2′nd track today… but Metrolinx sure does :)

    Hunter’s scorched earth policy has scarred many railroads for good.. the shareholders though…

  10. @AW..i already told familt and friends i want them to sprinkle my old ashes on some railroad tracks :-) ..lol hopefully not a siding and preferably not CP tracks :-)
