Here's something that these days can only be found at the odd Rail Museum. A Rule Instruction Car. Mobile classroom !! :o) Best I have been told is that this particular car was a Diesel Instruction car originally.
Besides instruction cars, School cars and Dental cars were also in existence at one time. I understand this particular car was scrapped at Ottawa in 1991 and, despite somehow not labeling my slide thoroughly, see this as being shot by Niagara Falls passenger station. There is a photo on internet of this same car earlier in Fort Erie, so it was probably making the rounds. Comments invited. I'm not at all familiar with these various pieces of equipment.

  1. I’m curious abut the 3rd axle from left. A different kind of journal box or swapped out for roller? Would be strange to change out only 1 axle.

  2. Truly a handsome paint scheme Arnold! Great capture and so rare like you said. We had a narrow gauge version (former NR coach 39 > CNR
Coach 756 > Rule Instruction Car 3005 )here on the Rock but in the black and light grey scheme.

  3. There’s a School car preserved in Clinton Ontario.

    76 Victoria Terrace, Clinton, ON

  4. Sister Rule Instruction Car CN 15019 is preserved at the railway museum in Capreol, ON https://normhc.ca/

I have personal experience and knowledge of this car as my brother & I often travelled in CN 15019 during our summer vacations from school in the late 1950′s and early 1960′s as our Grandfather was the CN Rule Instructor on ‘the west end’ being predominately the Ruel and Caramat subdivisions in Northern Ontario.

The interior layout of these converted heavyweight sleeping cars was approximately two-thirds classroom, and one-third living quarters for the instructor.

The living quarters contained a bedroom with washroom and shower, a kitchen, and a combination living/dining area at the end of the car.

It was very similar to a regular business car but without the multiple bedrooms, larger dining area, or the observation balcony.

Love that 1954 olive green, black, & gold stripe paint scheme!

    Other Instruction cars in CN’s OCS fleet included Diesel Instruction Cars, Mechanical Instruction Cars, Signal Instruction Cars to name a few. CN 3005, 15005, 15014, 15019, 15022, 15023, 15025, 15026, 15029, 15030, 15041, 15064, 15079, 15090, GT 15037, and CV 4100.

Most of these cars were scrapped at the end of their useful life in railway service.

Views of CN 15019 (being used as a library in Gogama, ON) and CN 15029 (preserved at the Alberta Railway Museum in Edmonton) can be seen here …
