MLW C-424, CP 4242 makes a nice leader as it rolls Hamilton-bound under the McQuesten (High Level) bridge. Second unit is C&0 3539. The 4242 must have been a good 'runner', as it has made the rounds since leaving the CP roster by 1998 and currently is on the Arkansas & Missouri.

  2. I am only assuming it was. I think it came “down the hill” and perhaps wyed at Aberdeen and off along the CN Oakville sub. Thanks for the compliment. I rather like this shot, meself. :o )

  7. How observant you are !!! I had forgotten all about this photo. I can only say I must have been in physical overdrive to get from one place to the other like that!!

  8. The image at Hamilton West showed up in the favourites bar and I thought hmmm, looks familiar. I also
    wondered how you could get two shots of the same train in such close proximity, especially given the scrambling that would’ve been required to get the one under the High Level bridge. Perhaps it stopped at Hamilton Jct waiting for the Toronto bound Starlite to clear ? I don’t remember if the old track config would’ve necessitated such a stop by the detouring train. In any case, the images are a fantastic one-two punch !

  9. Well, Aitch, it must have waited for something.
    I checked my film strips (these were not slides)and I noted not only did I have enough time to drive over to the High Level; park, run across York Blvd and down and under the bridge to the other side of the tracks, I also had time to reload film. This image was the first frame on a new roll. :o )

  11. This is a detour brought on by the infamous wreck in Mississauga. Priority trains ran all the way from London to Mimico on CN, lesser trains ran into Hamilton from Guelph Jct. This train is running agaoinst the current of traffic. This was necessitated by high cars on the train. Some cars would clear on the “outbound” track but wouldn’t on the “inbound”. In this case the train would pull in, wye the power & head out the clear track, set the van over & then pull out & double to it, heading for Mimico or Guelph Jct. I imagine this was ultimately headed to Toronto, as those two units couldn’t take much tonnage up the hill to Waterdown.

I was on one of those London/Hamilton/Toronto trains and just before we arrived at Guelph Jct, the Operator came on the radio & advised that we had to switch out & set off a few over height multilevels that wouldn’t clear Desjardins Canal bridge per my other post.They were near the tail end and we ran the power around the train & did it from the west end. Bt the time we arrived at Toronto Yard, we had been on duty 15 hours from 6AM (Called at 4)to 9PM)They wanted us to go right back on a westbound but we took 5 hours rest.That made them mad so we were called when our rest ended to relive the No 1Aux crew at Mississauga. We stayed 5 days & brought all the cripples to Toronto Yard Thursday. They sure showed us not to book rest. We made a fortune that pay period though.

  13. Thanks, Ronald. :o ) It has been a long time but from a fan standpoint I thought all the detours wyed power in Hamilton and then set out along the CN Oakville.

  14. A&M got ex-CP 4222 and 4242 from someone (QGRY?), but IIRC both never ran on A&M and got scrapped for parts some time ago. Despite them also getting ex-BRC C424′s and ex-CN M420W, they always seemed to prefer their C420 units.
