Canadian Pacific Railway D10h's 1098, 1092, and their passenger consist are seen at Orangeville Yard, after arriving northbound on a Buffalo NRHS chapter fantrip operating northbound from Streetsville to Orangeville. Riders are out and about crowding the yard near Town Line crossing, that intersected the north end of the yard. Some have climbed on the tenders of the two D10's, possibly to watch as they take on water at the adjacent water spout.

The top of the original CPR station (since moved and today a restaurant) is visible above the baggage car, and behind that the bunkhouse (burned down in 2006), freight sheds further back, and angled coal tower in the distance near the roundhouse. There were tracks behind the station that lead to coal and oil dealers, grain elevators, the stock pens, all local amenities for a small railway town. In the early 1900's, the original engine house, turntable and coaling platforms used to be located north of the crossing where this photo was taken from, but were relocated to the south at some point in time. One can see part of the Niagara Escarpment rising up in the distance.

What's really interesting about this photo is, judging by some of the people in the shot, it was taken at the same time as this photo by Bill Thomson. One of the figures at the lower right could very well be a young Bill taking his photo, captured by this unknown photographer standing on top of some freight cars nearby.

Original photographer unknown, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.

  1. What a great scene, and that note re Bill is a great detail.

Reminds me of the Bruce Lowe shot with James Victor Salmon; http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=43811

  2. Probably the best image I have seen at this location. Marvelous!!!
