Oshawa Revitalization

QGRY 3548 basks in the remaining sunlight of a chilly January day while the crew prepares to switch out truck frame flatcars at the GM Plant in Oshawa, Ontario. A long, hard fight was needed to keep this plant alive, otherwise GM would’ve pulled out of Oshawa completely and produced all vehicles in Mexico to maximize profits.

  1. Thanks for this Liam. Good to see railway switching action once again at the Oshawa GM Plant, and totally agree with your thoughts, after a long hard struggle, UNIFOR & City of Oshawa – 1, greedy GM – 0. Has CP started delivering cars to this plant ? Note the new sign “End of Track” – guess that’s where CN takes over from G&W. Very nice to see G&W orange, rather than CN black & red. Reflecting back to 1955 when I first saw OR electric motors switching the old GM North plant and hauling 15, maybe 20 cars through downtown Oshawa streets to the CNR, so much has changed. Thanks for braving the cold, John

  2. Thanks John! CP has run a couple of T10s with autos to Oshawa, but on no set schedule as of yet.

  3. Nice photo Liam. Apparently G&W is contracted to operate this new operation for Synergy Rail if I have that correct.

  4. That sounds correct as the job is officially called Railsynergy Oshawa.

  5. railwayguy,

I’m not sure where CN officially takes over but that is the end of the line. There at one time was a yard to the left here where in 2009 you can see was filled with racks to be loaded. it was removed sometime after 2012 and that track and one track left there in place as stubs.
