Caption: With the arrival of spring, I was able to once again bike around and explore the railway lines around Waterloo. Unlike the previous year, this time I had a new camera and wanted to explore further into Kitchener. During the early evenings I would often follow the Waterloo Spur to Kitchener and wait for any trains at the VIA Rail station or at the yard by Lancaster Street. While the first few trips didn’t turn up anything, one night while waiting at the station I saw a headlight come into view further to the east. I quickly biked down to the yard and waited at Lancaster Street while the train slowly came closer. This would be the first CN train I ever photographed at the Kitchener yard.
Here, CN train 421 is seen after taking the siding in Kitchener on April 15, 1993. On this spring evening, CN GP40-2L(W) 9527 and a SD40 haven’t made good time across the Guelph Subdivision. They will eventually meet the eastbound International with VIA Rail 6446 after they lift several flatcars loaded with new car frames made at the Budd plant in Kitchener.
