Having arrived earlier in the day as VIA 693 The Hudson Bay, the gleaming consist now sits idle until its 19:30 southbound departure as VIA 690 to The Pas, MB. The Budd stainless steel passenger equipment is being kept powered and warm by headend power supplied by VIA 6455 and VIA 6457. It's just too cold in Churchill to shut down the locomotives and connect to wayside power on this trip. It was a bone chilling -31C feeling like -43C when the train arrived at 09:00 this morning, but the temperature has spiked to an almost balmy -23C feeling like -32C at the time of this 15:00 hrs. photo!

  2. What a neat little passenger train, complete with dome car !
    Guessing the second Chateau sleeper was a buffer car. It sure looks cold, can just hear the snow crunching under your boots as you were walking around. With my luck, my camera would have frozen at these temperatures. Was the station open and was it warm inside ? Thanks for posting, John

    It truly was a winter adventure! I’ll be posting more photos of my time in Churchill, The Pas, and places along the way in days to come.
    Despite the blistering cold weather, I maximized my time outside in Churchill to get as many photos as possible during my 10 hours on the ground. I would spend a half hour outside taking pics, then go into a restaurant, the community center, or a store for a half hour to warm up before heading out again. The town folk were very accommodating and I was welcomed wherever I stopped in. I drank a lot of coffee in the morning, then switched to hot chocolate in the afternoon during my warming stops.
    I kept my camera in a large interior pocket of a down-filled vest I wore over my winter coat. Between the down-filling of the vest and my body heat, the camera remained relatively warm, and operable all day!
    The station was open for train arrival then closed for the day after all arriving passengers had been picked up by their hotel or tour operator shuttles. It would re-open at 18:30 for passengers (me & two others in Sleeper Class) boarding VIA 690 destined to The Pas. The Parks Canada Museum in the station was closed the day I was in town so I could not use the warm & cozy station waiting room and facilities during my time in town.
    My day in Churchill, two days in The Pas, and one of my 3-hour stops in Thompson were all blue sky and sunshine. I couldn’t have asked for better weather for both photo taking, and walking around the towns. :-)
