Caption: Alongside the Thompson River west from Savona, CP’s mainline climbs to Walhachin, and at the summit on the compass-south side is an outcrop of rock ideal for crushing into ballast, hence the two extra tracks beside the siding. From the top of that rock, the view eastward on Sunday 1980-06-08 at 1635 PDT included a CP westbound, symbol train 67, with 5664 + 5785 + 57xx + 8501 for power, and in the distance down close to the river, CN’s Ashcroft sub. mainline.
The area from Savona to Walhachin and Semlin to near Ashcroft is not blessed with many easy access points, but is well worth long walks, one of my “happy” places on this planet.
