Back before all the modern GO/VIA facilities were built here, the view looking east off of the Waterdown Rd bridge in Aldershot was of a long yard on the north side. This image shows CN 5041 and 9459 pulling out onto the north main with some TOFC up front, general freight in behind.  It has been quite a few years since we have seen trailers on flat cars over either CN or CP.
The SD-40 5041 went off roster in 1999 and was rebuilt to a SD40-2 for BNSF according to the Cdn Trackside Guide.
As for the wooden Aldershot namesign.........it SHOULD be in my garage, but, alas, it isn't.

  1. What was that version of Aldershot yard used for?

  2. Jakob, I would think mostly storage for Burlington’s industry. In the 70′s Oakville and Hamilton were the major interchange places. This is only speculation from looking at old train ID’s and destinations but Mr. Mooney would know more on this topic.

  3. Actually I know little on this topic but I will go with “overflow and storage” as I seem to recall the idea of Hamilton yard being moved to Aldershot. It never happened of course, but there is still considerable free land along the Hwy 403 in the vicinity….wondered if it was for future railroad considerations.

  4. Hamilton yard should move there..burlington will never say yes.

    The waterfront land in Hamiltom could be a great prestige development similar to Toronto’s yard redevelopment.

    The province has the power to tell burlington to stick it.
