At the time of this photo, Trillium was known as the Port Colborne Harbour Railway; now currently known as 'GIO'.
I had been looking at Glenn Cherry's posting along Harbour Spur with #1859 from a few years ago (id=27715) and so am offering up this.....
CN has removed Bridge 20, (in background) which isolated the elevator buildings down by Lake Erie as the CN Humberstone link has been severed. The new connection is under construction running along the west side of the canal, as seen here; and PCHR would be the operator of record once they had their Grand Opening Ceremonies on July 2, 1997.
When this image was taken, the track had only been laid as far as the Sherwood Forest road crossing.

  1. Yeesh… almost 30 years…nice capture

  2. Ya, I know, Klaucker. It is beyond scary.

  3. Nicely done, history captured. I would have liked to see that lift and set over.

  4. So curious for those who weren’t in the scene at the time (I was busy in university chasing a degree and the birds) how long did the elevator lose service for?

Was the bridge suddenly closed/removed? Seems strange they’d remove the bridge first..

  5. Steve… originally the plan was to not extend the line from Robin Hood, but use that location as a multi-modal facility and truck from ADM and P&H (Government Elevator) to Robin Hood then on to rails… there was a grass roots campaign to fight it… and the Seaway relented and kicked in their portion of the costs to extend the line… it was all well planned, the Allanburg Train bridge was removed the same time as Bridge 20 (cost reductions), my guess… the outage was probably 2 to 3 months…as an FYI… P&H did not renew their lease for the Government Elevator in Feb. 2025, and the facility is now vacant

  6. Thank you for the explanation. Hopefully the elevator finds another customer. Who owns it?

  7. The liability (…I mean asset) … is owned by the City of Port Colborne… estimated costs for a tear down are 10-20M… part of the former PORTS CANADA Elevator group that was downloaded for this long term reason

  8. The recent unit grain train was for ADM then?

  9. Seems so… I notice a couple of cuts of cars on their tracks, definitely no activity at ex P&H Elevator

  10. Of note, spoke with folks at GIO recently about the grain train. GIO crews and elevator staff got the unit train unloaded and back out to CPKC in 3 days. About 160 cars per the source. One job working the elevator, the other shuffling cars back and forth from Feeder

  11. Jacob…thanks for this…does this mean the LAC Elevator (former Robin Hood)…thanks MIKE

  12. Didn’t think to ask.
