Caption: Behind a pair of lightning-striped EMD E8As, train 50, the eastbound Empire State Express, roll into St. Thomas at 10:25h if on time. Lots of headend traffic makes up nearly half of this train. At left, pieces of work equipment can be seen, including the tip of a wedge plow, and a small flatcar with parts atop it. At right, the electrified connecting track of the London & Port Stanley Railway, running from the north side of the CASO station, west towards BX Tower, just visible in the distance, where it would swing north to connect with the L&PS mainline.
At left is the St. Thomas water tower, built in 1914, and holding the title of Canada's largest steel water tower, and second largest steel tank in North America. It was demolished in 1993. Photos taken from the tower in 1975 show various scenes of the town, including the railway. Take a look at these pics here.
