Caption: After a meet with SOO 6621 west (train 503) at Wolverton, Andy and I waited at the crossing for the conductor of 5527 east to turn the switch after they received their clearance to depart the siding following the meet. Within a couple minutes, M-636’s 4742 and 4743 put on a smoky show, exiting the siding, trailing SD40 5527 and HLCX SD40 5008. Their thick black exhaust lingered in the humid air, as the eastbound increased speed and clattered out on the main. A mainline both M-636’s called home for decades. Fittingly just like that it came to be that was the last time I ever saw a CP big alco in active service as the pair were shut down and retired later that summer.
