A lot has changed in the nearly five years since this image was taken. It was raining when I shot this photo of VIA 60 heading for Oshawa, but the rebuilt F40s were still few and far between in the Toronto area and I wanted to see one paired with a Budd consist. The field in the background was just that: a field. It is now a construction site and will eventually be the site of GO Transit's new East Rail Maintenance Facility. <br> <br> Of course, the most poignant change is that VIA 6444 is no more. In February 2012, the locomotive derailed east of Aldershot while pulling train 92. 6444 derailed and hit a building, the impact killing all three of the crew in the cab. The locomotive was subsequently written-off. The TSB investigation found that excessive speed through a crossover caused the crash, but the reason for the speed will always be a mystery.

With a colourful lashup of power on the headend, X311's train pulls into Jasper for a crew change. CN C40-8M 2433, PRLX SD75M 200, GECX C40-8W 7344 and CN C40-8W 2176 provide the horsepower.

Railfans all over, trackside, on the platform, and of course - look closely - on the signal mast. The annual NRHS Buffalo Convention was held in Toronto at the end of August in 1958 featuring a two-day set of excursions, one over the CPR and one over the CNR the following day. Here we see the CPR train led by Pacific 1271 and <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=22158>Royal Hudson 2839</a> charging uphill belching smoke for all the fans. Having departed Toronto Union, the train would head south from <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=16593>Guelph Junction</a> to Hamilton returning to Toronto over the CNR's Oakville Subdivision.<br><br>By this time only four steam locomotives (including the two pictured) were still active out of John Street, 1271 (last G5c Pacific, built by CLC April 1947), Royal Hudson 2839 (H1c, MLW 1937), 1265 (G5c, CLC 1947), and <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=40263>2399 (G3g, CLC 1942),</a> all but one of one of which would be retired and scrapped. I adventured down here a few days prior, and noticed that some weeds beside the North track had been cut down, so knowing that, I took advantage of some open areas today. But not all areas were brush free. I ended up waist deep in thorns trying to get over to the side, and pulled a couple muscles hoping up onto the platform. Overall, it was worth it, as I caught a meet between one of the weekend GO Trains, and Amtrak 98, who ironically was led by unit 98. As I clean all the cuts and upload this photo, I ask myself. Was it worth it? My answer? Totally.

I visited CN's Stuart Street yard and roundhouse many times in 1960. In this May visit, I took record shots of the roundhouse and water tank--also capturing two unidentified steam locomotives, a 1300-series SW1200RS and S7 8211.

CP 8208 (ex-CP 8560) leads CP 650 past the Lasalle Yard, which was partly torn up recently. The track at the bottom is still in use and leads to the Lasalle Loop Spur, which still has two active clients.

CN # 2, the Super Continental, has just arrived at CP Sudbury, Ontario. The CN train had travelled down the ACR from Oba to Franz and east from there on the CP. From Franz to Sudbury, it ran as Second CP # 2. A pair of CP SW1200RS units, 8104 and 8158, have coupled on to the tail end of the train and are about to pull the train backwards to CN Junction on the Sudbury Terminal Subdivision where it will regain home rails. It will then back track to Capreol, Ontario where it will be split into trains 2 and 52 and continue its eastward journey only a couple of hours late.

Was a bit of a drive up from Toronto, but the worth it to catch a barn leading an SD60 and an SD40-2. CP 9004, 6248, and 6016 curve through the hills north of Barrie heading towards a meet with 113 at Craighurst. 1536hrs.
