The former Good Grain Company elevator silently observes the passage of the Kawartha Lakes Railway's eastbound roadjob T08 behind CP 2250, 3105, 2254, and 8209 with 30 cars (29 of which are for Unimin). The 8209 will be setout at Peterborough for a stint as the Peterborough Switcher, replacing the 8206. 1242hrs.

Not evident in the photo, work to restore the elevator has seen both the west and south sides refaced with new shingles, and the awning on the south side replaced after being absent for a few years. With luck, the annex on the west side will be rebuilt some day, as all that remains are the crumbling foundations.

 The gondola, SOO 63859, likely in OCS service, rests on the remnants of the siding that served the elevator, sitting almost exactly where boxcars of grain were once loaded. This is the furthest east I've seen them shove a car on the now stub ended siding, used more for parking MofW equipment and once, at least that I've seen in the past six years, eight loads from Unimin setout for reasons unknown (possibly reducing tonnage due to power problems). The siding switch is just out of sight around the bend behind the train.

  2. Thanks James. It was taken at 1242hrs… they got going late this day, almost 0930 before they left the yard.

  3. Mike: I always enjoy seeing photos taken from along this line as back in the ’70s I was around here frequently. Missed most RR action as the freight was either very early (EB) or very late (WB)Like the station names… For example; Draneol, named after some Tall Forehead with the railroad…Leonard, spelled backwards. What is left in old time stations along this trackage??

  4. Arnold, as far as I know the only stations left standing are Peterborough and Havelock. Other towns along the line that would have had stations, such as Agincourt, Locust Hill, Claremont, Myrtle Station, Burketon, Pontypool, Manvers, Dranoel, Cavan Station (unless the house there is the old station), Indian River and Norwood are all gone. I know there was a shelter at Dagmar, which is gone, and there may have been others.

    Even the ‘elegant’ VIA ‘stations’ at Pontypool and Agincourt ate gone.

  5. Thanks, Mike. I think you have covered them all!! Looking back, around 1977, Myrtle was a shelter, as was Burketon, Draneol & Dagmar. I did see the other structures, but not Indian Point. Don’t even know that one. Cavan station looked to be the same model as Claremont or Pontypool, or perhaps even Norwood. Not sure if I have anything Manvers. Of course there were more stations, but long before our time. Now I am wishing spring was here. I NEED to revisit that line. Your info more appreciated than you realize. :o )

  7. Steve, that’s what I’m referring to as the annex, although it looks a lot more like an office. Possibly the building behind the elevator in your shot is the annex, which appears to be gone now, though was still standing within the last 12 to 18 months… I have a few shots showing that outbuilding, and it’s likely it was a victim of gravity judging by it’s condition.

    Arnold, there is a resident in ‘Manvers, (on Manvers Station Rd) who keeps the old station site mowed. Drop me a line for the days they run if you’re going to shoot it.
