'CANADIAN' CAPREOL CAP UP. Running some 11 hours late out of Toronto on January 28, 2018, gave this rail-fan and his wife the opportunity to witness daylight scenery in Ontario that is viewed by very few if the 'Canadian' had adhered to her previous 2300 Departure the evening before. With the sun setting and the nearly full moon visible above the 6409, VIA RAIL's westbound # 1 stops for her first refuelling in the town of Capreol, ON. This was the first of several refuelling stops, with the next taking place while travelling through the Canadian Shield to Sioux Lookout. En-route to Vancouver and at his wife's suggestion, the train was taken so as to recreate their experience in 1988 in which the photographer proposed to his then girlfriend in the Canadian Rockies.

  1. They used that much fuel getting up there? Or am I looking at this wrong?

  2. I can’t say for sure how much was burned but it was the first stop for refuelling. At this point the train had been running since 10:00 AM that morning, including several stops at various sidings for meets. Our next refuelling would take place at Sioux Lookout the next day.

  3. I imagine they fuel in Capreol to be sure they have lots on board especially in Northern Ontario. It would be catastrophic if the train was delayed out in the bush in the cold and started running low on fuel.
The “4 Refuel” company has trucks all over the place.
