A flock of commuters speed eastbound on Highway 403 while IC 1000 speeds eastward on the Oakville subdivision. Most people tend to pan mundane things - VIAs, GOs, common leaders, and panning on cloudy/crummy days (which is good technique, mind you) but I believe you should pan the interesting - and even on a sunny day like this. Making your pan stand out is easy if you just choose the right subject, right? Built in 1995 the class leader of IC's Standard cab SD70 order is certainly interesting, for 18 years after the merger it still retains its original paint. I can think of many ways to improve this shot but it'll be a long time before I see another IC leader to take another crack at it. In a sea of mundane Dash 8s, Dash 9s and Gevos this is much more preferable of a subject to my tastes. - Steve

  1. Ahhh…hmmm…did you have permit to be on my turf?? :)

  2. LOL@Snake2. Just wait until I show up there mister.

  3. Phil are you going to buy one of the new houses they plan to build behind the “berm”??? Only $800k-$1M.

With the new houses going in behind here we expect the large tall noise fence will go in blocking off access to here permanently.

What’s funny is in 1999 Losani Homes was refused a development in here – it was zoned parks and open space, asking to re-zone for 20 detached homes.

Now it’s owned by Emshih (And they will likely still partner with Losani)

You can see plans – so much for parks and open space!

  4. I’ll offer a service you can go on my roof..

  5. Nicely put, and great image! Panning is one skill I have yet to master.

  6. Mundane trains are great subjects for practicing panning :)

  7. Now this is for the modellers: Notice how the weathering (dirt) is further weathered by the crew who use these units: boot marks on the ladder leading to the nose (for adding sand?) as well as a darkening of the dirt from the cab door along the side of the unit from jackets brushing up on the hood.

Dan Dell’unto: Let’s see you model this one bud :)

  8. Great photo Steve! Love it! Kind of a funny fact that your mentioning the history of the sd70s in IC paint while they are due from Athearn in n scale (maybe HO too) in less than than a week in n scale! I certainly can’t wait to get my hands on one of them!

  9. Kevin – you are right, it IS good practice, but it’s also… mundane if you have thousands of pans of the same stuff :)

99 – good stuff, but I don’t model. Not in the slightest – zero interest in it :)
