Interesting snow cover on the front grille.
It’s just another Christmas in Hamilton
When it snows, it snows hard. Great classic shot!
Nicely captured. The cast iron pinnacle on the GRS (General Railway Signal Co.) mast made for great door stops in many Signal Maintainer tool-houses.
The front radiator shutters on those EMD SW’s were automatically controlled by a thermostat, so it might have been to a railroad’s advantage to manually cover over part or all to help keep more heat in, especially in cold environments with low-speed switching where the engine temperature might not get too high.
Other roads like CP had problems with snow melting and freezing up the front shutters in road service, so used bolt-on plywood snowshields on the front handrails.
