Back in the days when trains ran thru Niagara Falls downtown, we see a couple of CP SD40s hauling traffic toward the steel arch bridge to the USA. Marker indicates ONE MILE to go. On the right is Palmer Ave. Power is CP 5529 and 5550. Track pulled around 2000.

  1. Great photo! Love the angle, and one can feel the harshness of winter with a touch of coldness from the steel – not just rails, but NA built diesels and the strong of auto racks too.

Too bad this is now a thing of the past. Recently, my wife told me that they’re making Niagara Falls as Canada’s equivalent to ‘Las Vegas’. More casinos to be built, more resorts to be built, hotels, etc. Sadly, aside from GO Transit, it doesn’t sound like there is too much planning by way of railway infrastructure to bring all these tourists, if these rumours are true.

  2. Well, if they have ideas about making the Falls a “Canadian Las Vegas” they have to do something about the introduction to Niagara Falls via the GO train. You get off the train to a locked station, a bunch of abandoned boarded up dives and no place for a coffee or anything unless you want to walk a block or two and look for places you don’t even know are there unless you found out in a previous trip. Its like being dropped off in “no man’s land”. Thankfully the buses meet the trains to whisk you away before you get depressed about it.

  3. I thikn It’s changing Arnold. There’s now a fillipino restaurant in one of the formerly unused storefronts. The number of people who congregate at the station is starting to attract business who wakes up to the volume of customers dropped off by train and bus all day long.

I hope it continues all across the GO network – Bramalea station has a number of on-site vendors now, again due to the hundreds of people and thousands daily that use it.

This does little for places like Bridgeburg (Fort erie) with a former downtown basically with no future.

  4. The crowds I have witnessed at Niagara Falls when the GO pulls in on a weekend is worthy of a contribution to RP just to show the sheer size of bodies all looking for coffee or the bus. Unreal.
And to think, they used to have a shop at the station.
