I was worried that the sun was going to set before CN trains #450 and 451 showed at Gravenhurst, as the day comes to a close early in September. And too bad the "meet" was a bit down the line, but better than no meet at all.
I missed #450 as I heard it from the other side of town, but fortunately #451 northbound showed up. CN 9426, 9619, 9694, 9447, 9603 and 4521 made my run over to the station worthwhile. Beautiful evening to be shooting the breeze on the back of the caboose heading south. Such a shame trains are now cabooseless.
CN 451 and 450 ran between Toronto and North Bay (ONR) and I understand they still do, although no longer daily.

  1. Great image. Two man tail end crew, white flags flapping in the wind, three fully populated cross arms of telecommunication pairs and a signal cross arm on the bottom for the CTC and over lapping crossing approach circuits. At the time of this photo the CTC extended to the siding north switch Gravenhurst. The trains don’t meet here anymore, the north siding switch and the CTC have been removed, the former siding is cut just south of the Brock St. crossing.

  2. Thanks, Terry. I knew you would read a lot into this image. As an afterthought when I posted this I realized it would be 42 years ago this Wednesday that I shot this. Geezzzz………

  3. No wonder you weren’t at my 27th birthday party. You were out taking train pictures in Gravenhurst! ???? Great shot Arnold. Lots of classic CN railroading in that photo.

  4. Ahhhh, railroading as it should be – great picture ! Was in Gravenhurst 10 days ago for a cruise on Wenonah II and drove past the station – just not the same; 2nd track gone, CTC gone, switch in the foreground removed, fence along the edge of the platform, VIA sign gone. Station building looked OK, still being used as ONTC bus stop, Gravenhurst Taxi and the vet still occupy south end of the station, seems everyone and everything waiting patiently for the long promised return of the ONR Northland (if it happens !) As usual Mr. Mooney, well done, such a nice reminder of a bit of my past, John

  5. Really love this shot, so much to look at in this scene and it captures the evening light very well adding a real sense of depth and atmosphere.
