The weekend of October 13-14, 1962 provided railfans in the Montreal area with two excursions out of Central Station behind two steam locomotives. The Saturday trip would be led by J-4-d Pacific 5107, and the Sunday trip double headed with 5107 and U-2-c 6153. These trips run by the Canadian Railroad Historical Association were supported by the Upper Canada Railway Society.CNR 5107 is seen sitting to the north of CN's Richmond station during a water stop while en route from Montreal - Sherbrooke. The six car train had departed Central station track 9 that morning at 0829h making a water stop at St. Hyacinthe and three photo runpasts. One more runpast would be held between Richmond and Sherbrooke before turning the train for the return to Montreal, stopping for three more runpasts and water on the way. Back in Montreal, 5107 would be cut off at Bridge Street, leaving the consist in the care of MLW S4 8062 for the last couple of miles into Central Station. Today the Sherbrooke sub is operated by the St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad, and CNR 5107 is on display in Kapuskasing. Bill Thomson caught 5107 at Mimico in the summer of 1958.Directly across from the station on Rue Principale Nord (Main Street North) sits the Hotel Brunswick. Built circa 1910, the hotel served many travelers over many decades. Like the former station, now a restaurant, the building serves a new purpose today, as the Résidence Brunswick, a retirement home. Michael Berry's 2015 shot across the Richmond yard gives viewers the station at centre with the Brunswick off to the left.Scanning and editing by Jacob Patterson.

  1. The Kapuskasing engine.

  2. John; I have a similar picture in my collection taken by Doug Page.I wonder if he was standing beside you. Bruce

  3. Bruce, I am sure he was. This trip was promoted and advertised in the UCRS Newsletter and a number of members travelled to Montreal to ride this trip and the one the next day. We had an arrangement with CRHA to advertise their trips and they did the same for UCRS trips. The one joint trip was May 12, 1959 Spring Excursion from Belleville to Bancroft behind CN Mogul 90 + Consolidation 2649, and Doug was on that trip as he was on nearly all the UCRS Steam trips.

  4. John, what a wonderful capture! So delighted to see your beautiful images from that era. 5107 is beautiful! – Ken
