Props certainly help to make the scene sometimes. I’ve always loved all the old factories in Hespeler, even if the majority have been repurposed. My hopes today were simply to find BNSF 2968 and grab a few photos, especially as I’m not sure how long the BNSF Gerps will be sticking around. After no luck finding it in Guelph I decided to check the Fergus spur. As luck would have it they were finishing up at the chemical facility south of Guelph and had lumber loads for Preston in tow. Great lighting made for a nice slow chase and some decent shots. Here solo BNSF GP39V 2968 passes Four Fathers Brewing company as they enter Hespeler with three cars in tow.

  1. Very nice!

  2. Great shot.

  3. Beautiful catch! And right behind you would’ve been where the old Hespeler train station stood…burned down early to mid 2000′s (I believe it was 2004 or 2005??…would have to check my records).

  4. AHA! It was 2002 when the station burned down. My photo of the building here: http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=25292

  5. “The station was destroyed by a fire set by an arsonist back on October 31, 2003”

  6. Todd, I’ll take your first hand knowledge as being much more factual that my online search. Not sure how I missed your comment before posting mine. ????

  8. Thanks Stephen…good to know about the moderation of posts that include links. You and the team do a great job!

Terry…my dates could be off. I’m sure that 2003 could be correct. I’ll have to find the photo of the last piece of the Hespeler station that I took…after the fire consumed the building and the site was cleaned up. It was tempting to take home, as it was left sitting on top of a nearly stacked pile of rubble or old railway ties (again going by memory as this was 22 years ago!).
