York-Durham Heritage Railway RS-11 #3612, which began life as DW&P, same number; is seen in downtown Unionville on a special train (along with YDRC 3610). I believe the occasion was the Mid-Autumn Unionville festival, and what I saw of it had quite a large turnout.
After close to 30 years, the YD Heritage outfit announced bankruptcy at the beginning of 2024.  I am wondering where all the locomotives went.  Anyone know ??

  1. It’s no 6060 excursion run by any means. But, great little photo. It is too bad by what’s happened to the YDHR…the only move I know was bringing an ONR unit back to its parent company (I think). As far as other motive power…unsure of disposal.

  2. I believe the two RS-3s were purchased by RERA Canada and remain in Uxbridge at the moment. Both are listed on their website along with a few passenger cars.

  3. Most of the equipment was sold to a Pennsylvania outfit.

  4. The RERA: Railway Equipment Restoration Association acquired the locomotives, (and possibly some coaches…unconfirmed).

    VHA acquired a few coaches, as did another buyer in the states. 3 parties total taking the equipment.

  6. Early December 2024:

    Looks like the Town isn’t interested in rail operations anymore, as Metrolinx has increased their requirements to run trains as they are owner of the track:

    “The Township of Uxbridge has announced that it will not be proceeding with a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a new rail operator.

    This decision follows discussions with Metrolinx, which indicated that any new lease agreement would include significant changes to the township’s liabilities and obligations, as well as numerous new fleet acceptance requirements for a rail operator, said a township statement.

    “With the significant new obligations for oversight, insurance, and liability, the township has decided not to release a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a rail operator, said the statement.

    It said the township is in discussions with Metrolinx to identify alternative uses for the site as well as the trail that runs alongside the tracks from Stouffville Go Station to Main Street in Uxbridge.

    “The train station and rail yard are key areas in our Downtown Revitalization Plans. Ensuring this space supports our vision, and a vibrant and active downtown is essential to any next steps for the use of this precious heritage asset.

    “While we work with Metrolinx on these alternatives, the township is committed to continuing to make the train station available for short-term rental opportunities and supporting tourism initiatives,” the statement added.”

  7. RERA did acquire two coaches in addition to the locomotives.

  8. Again, thanks to all for the information. I guess if you want prime land for development and do not appreciate an “ugly” RoW, bringing up the threat of liability insurances is a good way to ruffle the feathers of anyone so much as even thinking of reviving the railroad experience.

  9. Matthew Hayduk appears to be the president of RERA and RERA Canada and is the one leading this effort. I wonder if their plans are to keep the equipment here or move it to PA.

  10. Did the ONR reclaimed their former RS-3 #1310 ?

  11. 1310 was part of the RERA acquisitions

  12. All three locomotives, all budd coaches, 3 ONR coaches, 1 caboose, and 2 ballast cars were acquired by RERA. These are being moved now by rail.

    Two more cars were also acquired the rules car and riveted flatcar which will have to move out by truck or be scrapped if they can’t. The rules car is parked by the station and flatcar in the siding at Goodwood.

    I’m sure you guys saw the update by myself and Jacob in December. The movements are ongoing as I type this.

  13. It was a blessing, to say the least, that you guys braved the elements and went out to record history.

  14. We did, and we went back too! Moves are still occurring sporadically. 2 cars are at the interchange as of Monday.

    I’ve written a story that’s going to Railfan and Railroad in the next issue – it turned out to be a rather eventful night.

  15. I always wish I went to see them during their bucolic days as you pictured, all matching , old coaches… I was an idiot for not going then. It wasn’t all that far from the many times I drove through on the 401..

  16. The wooden boxcar was also acquired by RERA and moved to Saskatchewan by truck a few months ago.
