On May 5, 1995, CN had officially opened the new St. Clair River tunnel connecting Sarnia and Port Huron, Michigan. During the weekend of May 6-7 CN held many festivities in Sarnia and Port Huron to commemorate the event. CN had operated employee specials for workers across Southern Ontario as well as the US so they could attend the events along with their families. Both the American and Canadian passenger trains travelled down the Port Edward Spur in Sarnia to Centennial Park where the bulk of the festivities took place including live entertainment and displays. Here, the 20-car Blue Water Special with GT 6401, Amtrak 369 and Amtrak 297 are seen arriving near the Sarnia waterfront. This train hauled GT employees from Battle Creek, Lansing and Flint to the "Employee Day" events.

  1. Unreal.

  2. My family and I rode the train from Guelph including back and forth thru the new tunnel-was a great day!
    Nice memory Jason.

  3. Very nice, I also remember riding the go train through the tunnel with my father, was all of seven years old but was determined to wait in the long line to ride the train, riding in the bi level car on the top level one direction and the lower level the other way back.

  4. And to think just a short 23 years later, VIA held a similar event for their then 40th anniversary!

  5. Thanks guys for all the comments on the photo.

shaunhinz/NiagaraMike11- We rode the train through the tunnel to Port Huron too. We might have been on the same one!
