Westbound under the Old Guelph Rd bridge, CN #725 makes its way toward Nanticoke from Hamilton. I am standing on the walk bridge over the line that connects the Royal Botanical Gardens to Homestead Av, where I parked at the end. It is all "no parking" but I figured I could get away with 10 minutes or so. The power is CN 9166, 9195 and 9177, a nice A-B-A set. Next chance I had to catch this train was a week later and the 9177 had been replaced by GP9 4572. I'm glad I didn't take those old warriors for granted.

  1. Lovely shot A.W.! Is there a reason why CN often assigned A-B-A F7s to this train rather than usual back-to-back road freight engines?

  2. Thanks, Ian. I really do not know why they used them on this run. I suppose it was because it was generally a short train running a short distance? The Fs were at the time based around here because I would see them in Hamilton and Fort Erie for awhile back then. They were on their last legs.

  3. Amazing. I heard there was a ‘friendly’ to railfan person in the motive power department and purposely picked this power for the run.

I’d like to understand how long it lasted… like this.. did this last into Winter? Sometimes F units were preferred for snow.

  4. I used to think the same thing myself when the AA, ABA, & AB sets came through town, the guys at the shops are putting them together for us photographers. I look back now and think maybe the shop guys were having the last fun with them (which would include picture taking) before they all left the roster. :-)

  5. I wouldn’t have thought that, i bet it never happens nowadays, with how restrictive the railroads are.

  6. Super pic

  7. Very nice. Great light for this.
