On a sunny October day in 1972, CN M636 2334 and SD40 5075 lead an extra freight off the Halton Sub at Burlington, about to enter the Oakville Sub and head west. The first few cars are passing over the Brant Street underpass. This photo was taken not too long after the Brant Street grade separation project (that took place in the late 1960's). Looking at 1965 and present-day aerial imagery it's hard to note the exact changes, but it appears Brant Street was realigned to the east, and the (closer) houses in the background were once along the south side of Plains Road East where Burlington Hyundai is today. The Sunoco may be the same one on the SW corner that was a Petro Canada until recently. Some more gas pumps appear on the NE corner, and beyond that housing along Leighland Rd (visible before the current plaza was built).Bill Grandin photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection negative.

  1. Very interesting image for a former Burlington Lad, Dan. I think the white building was The Clans, restaurant and coffee shop. When I was a kid the Sonoco was Fred Carter’s Station. The Esso Voyageur was just out of sight on the left. Everything is so wide open in this shot.
    Memories!
And of course, right behind the photographer is the Oakville Sub and the Freeman station. The relining of Brant St and resulting underpass doomed Freeman as a village.
