That sure is an odd one, i wonder why they wouldn’t just use available power that’s laying around for these trains.
Trust you to come up with something like this. The prairie so vast, yet you find time to cover it.
Ian, I suspect that the reason they’ve gone to dedicated M of W units, is that they’re operated by MOW staff and the company gets the work done without paying for train crews. The second possibility is that it saves budgetary & loco distribution headaches to have units “owned” by the Engineering Dept.

I work on this train. This unit is the spare unit when our other ones breakdown. Normally we had old GP38s.
