Awesome and heartbreaking at the same time.
Arnold, I am glad as well that you caught this consist. CN 4016 was a regular on CN passenger trains, frequent the Barrie commuter train operated by CN. However, don’t remember 4103 in passenger service very often. Thanks for sharing, John
Yeah, I imagine that wasn’t a great feeling at the time, but it’s awesome you still took the photo. These are now classics in their own right.
So in 1978, 6060 was 34 years old (built 1944), 4016 was 11 years old (built 1967), and 4103 was 21 years old (built 1957).
After retirement from CN, 4016 (then 9316) got a rebuild and is now Roberval & Saguenay 65, now considered a “GP38-3″ according to the CTG. So it is still active, and is now 59 years old.
The 4103 entered the PSC rebuild before getting renumbered, and came out as GP9RM 4104. (So close!) It retired in 2004, at which point it was 47 years old. Of course a few other GP9RMs are still active, pushing 70.
Summary on the future of those locomotives in this photo much appreciated, Jakob.
I’ll have to research what has become of 6060 these days. Ontario should have never let her go.
