Drawbridge Trent Canal, Mile 88.4 CN Newmarket Subdivision. June 2, 1979. Via FP7A 1402 (ex CP) with CP Rail GP9 8511 (the future 1637) power the northbound Via Canadian enroute to the CN Washago station stop. Over the years Via had numerous variations of the transcontinental service, would appreciate someone looking up the Via or CN timetable for this train's number. What's interesting: The Bridgetender's row boat is tied up at the centre pier, the bridgetender's cabin was located at the west bridge abutment (to the left). Note the weekend pleasure craft line up awaiting the draw bridge opening by the CN bridgetender. Washago is CN Newmarket Sub. mile 98.8 and CN Bala Sub. Mile 88.9 (miles from Toronto Union (depot)). Please also see my 6060 Kodachrome near this location taken October 1977. Kodachrome by S. Danko.

  1. Neat consist, photos of CN SG’s in early VIA Canadian consists (especially operating with CP power) are hard to find!

  2. Really unusual to see a CP Rail GMD GP9 (the 8511),a the western steam generator geep, in S Ontario.

  3. sdfourty, very nice picture, not many colour photos taken at the Narrows, and as stated, rare picture of VIA acquired GP9 8512 from CP Rail. The power line poles across the Narrows channel in the background marks the approximate location of the CPR Medonte – Orillia – Lindsay rail line. This time the bridge tender’s row boat is tied up at the centre pier as opposed to the left pier, indicating to me that he is somewhere on the bridge structure, probably waiting for the Canadian’s passage and then will reopen the bridge for waiting boat traffic. Thanks for posting, John

  4. Steve, you have captured it all in this shot!
