Even the locals are a bit awe-struck as CN's "Nanticoke" steel train rumbles up the middle of Ferguson Ave.N. in downtown Hamilton on its way up the hill thru Rymal, Caledonia, Hagersville and Garnet to the destination at the big steel facility on Lake Erie, about a 36 mile trip.
Power this day is CN 9169, 9196, 9172 with a rather short train. Caboose at each end so power can run around train upon return.

  1. How I wish I could have seen this! Too bad I had kindergarten class that day…

  2. Here is the other Ferguson Ave shot (at present) found on rp.ca:

  3. To rsmith:
Excuse is not valid. You only had half day classes back then.

  4. My thoughts exactly Mr. Smith… except I was not born yet. It would of been amazing to see the booming rail industry that is no longer what it once was in southern Ontario!

  5. I like your street running picture Arnold!

  6. My buddy use to live in one of the houses that lined the one side of the street on Ferguson Ave. on that long bend off the main line. I loved sitting on the very small front pourch they had.

  7. Pardon me while curl up into the fetal position on the floor and begin sobbing while I suck my thumb.

  8. Hahahahaha…….expressed in the manner of a true foamer. Guess a lollipop won’t help ya?

  9. Congrats on hitting 40 Arnold. Pretty soon all this page will be is stars.

  10. Thanks for that, M. Host. I can’t believe it myself. Mucho thanks to all those who chose this as a ‘favourite’. Very appreciated.

  11. Great shot, that was great while it lasted. My excuse is that the only day I tried, they chose to go up the hill the other way. Glad you got it.

  12. So it went up thru Dundas? That would have been a downer. I suspect not many tried downtown Hamilton for a shot because it sure wasn’t as easy as it looks. Train left usually in the rush hour; no place to park; people looking at you like you’re half baked, standing out on the sidewalk with cameras and tripod; and of course asking what was so special about THIS particular train…..followed by the lowerlife looking for money to head to the hotel. And so on it went…….:o) I was glad to get out. Maybe I was just overly sensitive to the big city. Now I stay clear of most all of them.

  13. Yes they backed out of the yard and went up thru Dundas. I’ll scan that slide later. The street running was the reason for making the trip and I didn’t get back before they stopped. I wasn’t often by myself on trips that far so didn’t worry too much about the natives. But there are parts of Cleveland I don’t drive through even if I’m not looking to stop for a picture.

  14. Wasn’t this stretch known as the Rymal Subdivision from Hamilton to Caledonia, then turned into the Hagersville Sub.?

  15. Thats a query that needs an answer from a CN guy, Todd……I thought it was Rymal up to mile 6.0 but wasn’t sure, so called it Hagersville.

  16. After abandonment thru downtown Hamilton the hagersville and dunnville were combined and the remaining hagersville was downgraded to the rymal spur.

Boy arnold, 55 stars. This photo will break the internet soon :)

  17. This is the most popular image here at Railpictures? Congratulations, Arnold. My favourite image of yours is the one of Bullet-Nose Betty passing through Merritton, from 1980.

  18. Thanks, Joe. I suspect this one is popular because, well, it IS on the street; and no one else apparently captured it that I know of.

  19. Excellent! Sure takes me back.

  20. Thanks, George. I keep think how it was certainly a different world back then.

  21. Sweet jesus. 100. Congrats. I never thought this would ever happen to see 100 faves on a single photo. I might have to reprogram that section to make for different star types to let it all fit :)

There’s a ton of amazing photos on here that are just doing so well.

  22. Thanks, Lad. And of course thanks to all those out there who found this image worthy of the attention.!!

Wait till the end and may see people you recognize! A Don Rohauer video

  25. Great video. One of the guys I recognize but, no name. Didn’t see any others while out there myself.May 11,1986 was a Sunday. I was out on a Monday.

  26. @ Steve, I assume those guys travelled with Donnie from the states. If we really wanted to know I could ask him.

  27. Just watched the video. The person who turns around is Helmont Ostermann from Kitchener.

  28. Utterly speechless ! So I can’t leave a comment. ????
