A rare 1978 sight indeed: A – B – A lash up of CP Rail F units on a passenger train – common each summer on The Canadian up to 1970 - except this is not a CP Rail train !

Effective October 29, 1978 Via ceased service on the CP Rail Mactier Subdivision and re-routed the transcon service onto the CN Newmarket Subdivision south of Washago.

Today, the CN Operator at the Barrie station has set the station signal board at stop for the newly re-routed VIA Rail train #2 powered by ex CP Rail F units 1432 – 4477 – 14xx .

  1. Now isn’t THAT a nice piece of history captured!

  2. Thanks for posthing this series. I have only ever seen one photo from this era of CP Rail painted equipment in Barrie.

  3. Cool shot!

  4. Just saw this up on favourite photos. Very nice! An older post and thread but some questions. How come they didn’t utilize this station as the current ‘Allendale GO station (why Allendale – not Barrie?) without having to build a new one. There’s ample parking around the structure and they wouldn’t have had to rip out the track. Another question..what is the use for the this station now? It looks forlorn and possibly abandoned.

  5. The existing station was built on a curve. Not the best for 12 car GO trains, and the opportunity to extend the line to Orillia was gone by that point. The station was rebuilt by the City of Barrie in 2011, but is tied up in a lawsuit over a development deal that fell through and its also involved in a First Nations land claim. The site is currently undergoing an archaeological assessment which has revealed the foundation of the 1860′s station behind the center building.
