A string of retired veteran CN ore cars is shown awaiting their fate at the S Yard in MacMillan Yard in Vaughan, Ontario. The hopper cars were in the 344000 series, and most were over four decades old, having been built during the mid-1950’s.

During a summer morning, Essex Terminal Railway GP9 108 is shown switching Ojibway Yard in Windsor, Ontario’s west end. This summer, GP9 108, which was the last unit in the railway’s yellow paint scheme, was sent for work to the Lambton Diesel Specialists (LDS) facility in Sarnia and emerged in a new paint scheme.

Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway (CBNS) caboose # 2000 is pictured sitting in the community of Port Hastings, which is situated on the southwestern tip of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The van was former CN 79509 and was used frequently by CBNS crews at the time. Today, photos online and a satellite view show this van still stored on CBNS property on a siding at Afton Station.

The Windsor and Hantsport Railway (WHRC) was a 56-mile (90.1 km) railway that operated in Nova Scotia between Windsor Junction, which was located north of Bedford and New Minas. Also, at Windsor there was a spur that ran several miles east serving two gypsum quarries located at Wentworth Creek and Mantua. WHRC had officially suspended operations in fall 2011 after the gypsum quarries closed.

In better times, WHRC RS23 8027 is photographed at Windsor, Nova Scotia by the shortline’s engine shop. It was one of the last active RS23’s that still retained a multi-mark and it was built as CP 8027 in September 1959.

Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway (CBNS) GP18 4700, which is former Grand Trunk Western 4700, sits stored in the deadline with several other units in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The GP18 was named “Gerard MacNeil” and was scrapped by CBNS in 2007. The other units in the deadline were GEXR GP7u 700, IORY GP9 62 as well as GSWR GP7u 2160 and GSWR GP7u 2176.

This summer, GP9 108, which is the last unit in the railway’s yellow paint scheme, was sent for work to the Lambton Diesel Specialists (LDS) facility in Sarnia. There are unconfirmed reports the unit might receive new paint while at LDS, which would be the end of an era for the classic ETR yellow scheme. As of the end of July, there was no confirmation if the GP9 would be repainted.

During a May afternoon over 22 years ago, GEXR train 433 with 3843 and LLPX 2263 is pictured meeting CP T72 from Galt at South South Jct. in Kitchener, Ontario. The CP job is powered by GP38-2’s 3038 and 3096. At the time, GEXR train 433 was a dedicated train that operated daily during the week to service the Budd Plant in Kitchener on the Huron Park Spur. After lifting the loaded automotive frame cars and setting-off empty flats, they would depart on the Guelph Subdivision for CN’s yard at London East where they would interchange traffic.

Essex Terminal Railway GP9 102 approaches the Texas Road crossing as it departs Amherstburg, Ontario on the ETR Subdivision with cars from industries that are now long gone. During January 2005 the bankruptcy of General Chemical had ended rail shipments of calcium chloride and Don Hearn & Sons, which had a contract to bag soda ash for Allied Chemical eventually ceased using rail. Also, in 2014 Honeywell had officially closed their Amherstburg facility. However presently, Diageo Canada receives regular rail service by ETR from Windsor.

GP9 102 was built for the Algoma Central Railway in August 1963 and was the last GP9 ever constructed at London’s General Motors plant. It was eventually purchased by ETR where it worked until it was acquired by the Ontario Southland Railway in 2016.

Ottawa Central Railway (OCRR) train 525E with RS18u 1838 (ex-CP 1838) is curving towards the Rabbit Path crossing at Mile 18.09 of the Renfrew Subdivision. This location is near the town of Kinburn, Ontario. At the time, 1838 was returning from the Honeywell Nylons Canada plant in Arnprior, which saw service once per week under OCRR. On April 30, 2003 Honeywell Nylons Canada Inc. had acquired the facility from BASF, including the former Arnprior-Nepean Railway (Renfrew Subdivision), which became a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell. Later, when CN acquired OCRR during 2008, it continued the weekly trips to the now Nylene Canada plant, still servicing it once per week with L589 from Ottawa’s Walkley Yard.

A bitterly cold December afternoon sees Goderich-Exeter Railway train 581 lifting a cut of salt hoppers at the Goderich harbor that were loaded at the large Sifto salt mine in the background. The consist included; GEXR GP38 3821, GSWR GP7u 2127 and GEXR GP9 177.

CN 580 with GP9RM 4121 is returning along the Burford Spur in Brantford, Ontario after working the SC Johnson & Son plant. The train is pictured crossing Darling Street where it intersects along the Clarence Street portion of the line.

Ontario Southland Railway RS18 183 south arrives in Tillsonburg, Ontario with a small train from the CP interchange at Ingersoll. The train is going under the classic “telltail” on the Tillsonburg Spur (former CP Port Burwell Subdivision). Built with a low nose in 1968, RS18 183 is ex-INCO 208-3. The view was from the now abandoned Caso Subdivision, which crossed over both the CP Port Burwell Subdivision and CN Burford Subdivision at this location.

The CP/STLH “Grand River Job” based out of Galt Yard in Cambridge, Ontario is busy switching the very large Uniroyal Goodrich Plant in Kitchener, Ontario on the Goodrich Spur. The power was GP38-2’s 3042 and 3047.

On February 13, 2003, a CN train had derailed almost 30 cars of general freight near Gobles, which sits east of Woodstock, Ontario on the CN Dundas Subdivision. Nearby residents were evacuated because the tankers involved were carrying benzene liquid and petroleum gas. Due to this incident and further complications during the clean-up effort, CN detoured some trains over the GEXR Guelph Subdivision between Georgetown and London over several days.

My photo here shows an afternoon detour CN train 385 going westbound by the Stratford, Ontario station on the GEXR Guelph Subdivision. The lash-up was CN SD70I 5623 and SD75I 5705.
