![Single unit operation has always been photographically appealing to me, with GP9s fairly common in British Columbia, and in Alberta also the odd MLW. So it was a happy encounter finding the daily wayfreight No. 83 from Medicine Hat arriving Lethbridge with a single script albeit grubby C-424 4204, seen here on the eastern outskirts of town on Thursday 1974-10-03.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/1974-10-03-1430mdt_no-83-eng-cp4204-arriving-lethbridge-ab_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1280x841-pixels-200x150.jpg)

![On Thursday 1974-10-03 after a busy day of photography, all was quiet on the CP Cranbrook sub. at Elko as the moonlight broke through the clouds, allowing time for a long exposure of the depot and its clear order boards. It was a cold night, that one.

![After the 1981-01-01 takeover by CN of Northern Alberta Railways, NAR power was renumbered into the CN series, then later the Northern Alberta lettering and diamond symbols were blacked out, and eventually (typically coinciding with overhauls) full CN paint was applied. One full and one partial remarking are shown here, 4602 the former NAR 201 and 4606 formerly NAR 205. Spirit River is at the very west end of the CN Smoky subdivision, five miles west of a junction at Rycroft where most traffic runs south to Grande Prairie, and the five-mile stretch is utilized now for car storage. The crossing in the photo is 52 Street, and the grain elevators and trackage seen here are now history for five blocks east, all blank to 47 Street.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/1987-05-26_cn4602+4606-switching-at-spirit-river-ab-4_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1280x854-pixels-200x150.jpg)

![North of Wellington, Green Lake is on the west side of the E&N Victoria sub. with a trestle bridge at mile 79.9 over a little bay of the lake. Of my numerous visits there, this one from a little inflatable boat on Tuesday November 11th 1980 with kids on school holiday and CP 9064 running on time at 1439 as train No. 198 is probably my favourite shot at that location. ![On the cold morning of Thursday 1974-10-03 at Aldersyde, AB, train Second 75 with FM/CLC H16-44 8720 leading and GMD F7B units 4433 and 4444 trailing has paused at the depot (the mast seen above the first boxcar is for the radio at the depot) for a meet with southward train 992. No. 75 was a daily train from Lethbridge via the Aldersyde sub. to a junction with the Macleod sub. (near the tail end of this train) and onward to Alyth Yard in Calgary. ![Westward from Grande Prairie, AB, the Northern Alberta Railways line to Dawson Creek, BC, travelled through numerous small communities, the first being Dimsdale, and this view is a few miles east of there at mileage 54.8, providing an ideal picturesque prairie branchline scene with good lighting for the Monday, Wednesday, Friday passage of train No. 51 westward from Grande Prairie, seen here with GP9 206 on Wednesday 1977-09-21, just a normal day in the paradise that is the Peace River region in autumn. A single GP9 running short-nose-leading was always a magnet for me and my cameras.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/1977-09-21_no-51-eng-nar206-at-mileage-54d8-approaching-dimsdale-ab_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1280x854-pixels-200x150.jpg)

![Normally three of NAR’s four SD38-2 units were utilized between McLennan and Roma Jct. on the Peace River grades for which they were ideal, and the fourth cycled between McLennan and Dunvegan Yards in Edmonton. That is what 401 is doing here, leading GP9 201 westward on the French Creek bridge at mile 81.8 just south of Fawcett at 1243 MDT, with 49 miles to go to a crew change at Smith, then another 131 to reach McLennan.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/1980-09-25-1243mdt_na401+201-westward-on-french-creek-bridge-81d8-near-fawcett-ab_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1280x869-pixels-200x150.jpg)

NAR 403+404+402 are southbound on the second half of a GSL Turn on Thursday 1979-09-27 with concentrate loads from Pine Point Mines at the far end of CN’s Great Slave Lake line which connects to the NAR at Roma Jct. about ten miles behind the train. ![A couple miles north of Anzac on the Northern Alberta Railways line to Waterways in Fort McMurray, there was an area of muskeg, and a long but low pile trestle over one drainage area at mileage 263.5 with a reputation for experiencing a progressive wave action as a train passed over it. On Monday 1980-09-22, Mixed Extra 303 North with 311 trailing passed over at 1643 MDT without demonstrating that characteristic. The sapling on the far right was found lying nearby while I waited for the train to arrive, so was placed into the view for a bit of artistic balance!](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/1980-09-22-1643mdt_na303+311-mixed-extra-north-on-bridge-263d5-near-anzac-ab_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1024x646-pixels-200x150.jpg)

![When CN took over Northern Alberta Railways on 1981-01-01, change thankfully came slowly to start, with locomotives renumbered into the CN pattern but Northern Alberta markings and locomotive names left intact, as on CN 4611 (ex NAR 210) and CN 4610 (ex NAR 209) bracketing B-unit 9192 as a westward train approaches Sexsmith on Tuesday 1981-09-15 heading for Grande Prairie. ![A maze of branch lines operated out of Prince Albert, with CP often utilizing CN lines to access CP branches. One was the Nipawin Turn for 18 miles on the CN Paddockwood sub. to a junction at Sharpe with the CP White Fox sub. eastward to Nipawin. Typical service was a pair of MLW RS-23s and a caboose on CN from Prince Albert to Sharpe then on CP to Meath Park, then picking up grain loads through to Nipawin, then empties westward with setoffs at active grain elevators up to Meath Park, then running cab hop home to Prince Albert. On Tuesday 1976-09-28, that is what 8015 and 8017 are doing, westbound at Gobeil Road and less than a mile from CN track at Sharpe.

Today, this is empty grade; track extends northward from Prince Albert only 8 miles to White Star (Carleton Trail) and westward from Nipawin to Choiceland (Torch River Rail).
](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/1976-09-28_cp8015+8017-nipawin-turn-westward-from-meath-park-sk_ken-perry_4800-dpi-1024x671-pixels-200x150.jpg)
