![IC 2456, IC 2705, and CN 8851 lead 149's train through the broad curve at Bowmanville. Traces of the one time town spur to the Goodyear plant are slowly succumbing to vegetation or the wrecking crew, the only visible evidence in this view being the path to the left of the train. The shot here is getting tighter and tighter, and unless some foam hero does a little covert trimming, this classic view will be lost. 1914hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/IC2456-IC2705-CN8851-149-Bowmanville-05-12-16-1914-200x150.jpg)

![Every so often one will hear CN blowing for the old Beare Landfill grade crossing and CP for either Ressor Road to the west or Beare Road to the east, only to have the over/under shot marred by less than ideal timing. Case and point, a 206 car CN 305 makes its presence known to the south, moments later followed by CP to the west. CN is climbing a grade, whereas CP is not. But CP's trains are longer and if eastbound, they're only just beginning to accelerate out of yard limits as the power draws near to the bridge and not exactly making time on the approach. With CN 3010, 2662, and DP 2932 providing the impetus, and 125 of their 206 cars being potash empties, CN 305 easily gets to the over/under before CP. Opportunity lost.
<br><br>
So what are the odds of the over/under between the CN DP and the CP's headend? Apparently pretty good. Even better, CP 142's power includes a little bonus in the form of a former Conrail C40-8W, NS 8427, trailing CP 8879. Nice. 1206hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/CN3010-2662-DPU2932-305-CP8879-NS8427-142-Beare-02-25-16-1206-200x150.jpg)

![CN unit potash train number 730 curves through Whitby, Ontario, behind CN 2921 and 2809, with 3005 bringing up the rear. I don't know the exact tonnage or length of this monster, but it consisted of 151 loaded potash hoppers, which is not excessively long around these parts, but being in the 20,000 ton range would certainly qualify it as one of the heavier trains. 1329hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/CN2921-2809-DPU3005-730-Whitby-02-27-16-1329-200x150.jpg)

![Speed having picked up noticeably, the comment to the RTC was 'we're feeling more hopeful', as 318 grinds up the Oak Ridges Moraine on the approach to Pine Orchard's north siding switch. One crew on a passing NB commented 'it'd make a great shot for the CN calendar'. I took that to be in the vein of 'only on CN' and not 'that's awesome'. 1418hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/CN2115-BCOL4617-318-Pine-Orchard-01-17-16-1418-200x150.jpg)

![Down to about 1mph, maybe less, CN 2115 leads 318's train to the McCowan Road crossing at mile 38.38 Bala Sub. Sound somewhat muted by the snowfall, the shuddering of the wheelslip control, just letting them slip ever so little, was easier to discern. The hogger was a good sport, who stoically embodied the 'I think I can' spirit of the moment. I took 13 minutes to move roughly 1.2 miles to the Davis Drive overpass, where the pace had noticeably improved. One of those moments that helps you remember why railroading is fascinating... the drama can be quite compelling (and no GEVO's). 1405hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/CN2115-BCOL4617-318-Pine-Orchard-01-17-16-1405b-200x150.jpg)

![It happened again, this time due to a locked axle on the original leader, which was set off 'somewhere up north' according to the crew. Here as CN 2115 and BCOL 4617 are about of pass under hwy 48 in Mout Albert, they accelerate both after going in for 317 at Zephyr and in deference to the hard slog up the moraine set to begin momentarily. Within two miles they'd be down to about 1mph, exhaust screaming towards the heavens, though muted by the snowfall. Quite a show. 1352hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/CN2115-BCOL4617-318-Mount-Albert-01-17-16-1352-200x150.jpg)

![The classic over/under at Beare. It's pretty easy to do. First, open two shots in photoshop, one CP and one CN... heh. Ok, it's legit. CN 2100, 2544, and 5705 lead 149's train up the grade while CP 142's crew will be notching up 8712 and 8522 as their tail is now clear Staines. Back in the day, they'd already be rolling pretty good through here, but with 10,000' or greater trains on the Belleville Sub now, they're still watching the counter as they approach the crossing with CN. And CN? 10,000' is so 2001. 1439hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/CN2100-2544-5705-149-CP8712-8522-142-Beare-08-26-15-1439-200x150.jpg)

![CN 5303 and 5322 scoot up the valley at mile 47 of the Bala Sub with 486's train of 65 CWR and crude oil loads. Their pace will diminish in the next 10 miles as they begin the climb up the Oak Ridges Moraine.
<br><br>
I used to scoff at a consist like this on the Bala when I first started shooting up here, preferring anything exotic, which in the late 1990's wasn't really much. Now all of those GP and SD40's are good catches (if you can catch them), and I waited close to two hours here for this guy to arrive. 1918hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/CN5303-5322-486-Zephyr-08-23-15-1918-200x150.jpg)

![Barely dodging a spoiler cloud, CN 3001 lead IC 2719 and CN 3000 as DPU on 305's train at Bowmanville. I'm not sure exactly how these clouds know exactly where they are not wanted, but they seem really good at appearing at the wrong time. I'm not talking an errant drifter either, no, the sky above was clear (unlike in the background). This bugger formed spontaneously as the train approached. Oh well, almost CF'ed me, but not quite.
<br><br>
Their progress is already waning as YQ has instructed them to hold off getting to Oshawa East as there is a traffic jam in the 'Shwa' due to a dead unit on 306. It cost them about an hour, which is likely not welcomed by a crew that started it's day in Montreal. 1341hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/CN3001-IC2719-DPU-CN3000-305-Bowmanville-08-22-15-1341-200x150.jpg)
