![A trio of SD60F's grind up the York Sub grade with 149's train. I always have been, and always will be, partial to this scheme, and am well aware that this may very well be the last time I catch a trio working together. That it happens to be a matched set of SD60F's, all the better. Thanks to Delic for the heads-up. 1745hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/CN5521-5508-5558-149-Beare-04-08-15-1745a-200x150.jpg)

![VIA's 'Prince Albert Park' brings up the markers on #68 at Whitby, Ontario. The domes show up infrequently on these trains, not in service and presumably heading east for work. I have caught one on an all Budd consist, but a Park series (facing the right way of course) would make for a neat looking pocket streamliner. 1732hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/VIA6446-68-Prince-Albert-Park-Whitby-03-29-15-1732-200x150.jpg)

![Remembering with great irony how I despised the F59's throughout their service lives, not surprising given the riot of variety they eliminated, I'm pleased to catch a bobtailed GO Train approaching Whitby alongside CN 376. The pleasant two tone GO scheme is juxtaposed with the new, 'Green Vomit' scheme. Thanks to the stuffed shirt who felt that something not being broken is no reason at all not to try and fix it. GO 558 and 563 do the honours. 1216hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/GO558-563-WB-pass-CN-376-Whitby-03-29-15-1216-200x150.jpg)

![The first of what would become a number of good catches this day, NS 2703 leads CN 5556, 4141, and 4018 on 373's train through the grand curve at Whitby. One marvels at the luck involved in catching an NS leader with a 60F and two GP9's trailing, and I tip my hat to the power planners. For those wondering, the geeps aren't strictly along for the rid as the 4018 was working as they passed by Beare on the grade up the York Sub. 0946hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/NS2703-CN5556-4141-4018-373-Whitby-02-22-15-0946-200x150.jpg)

![After cooling their heels in the hole for close to two hours, CP 142 finally arrives for a meet with 643 at Spicer. With 124 cars, 643 would not fit into any other siding between here and Toronto other than Oshawa, and the RTC didn't think they'd make Oshawa without delaying 142. With 142 also over siding length, UP 3732 West got to put the newly extended siding here to use. This is the new norm for the Belleville Sub... longer trains and longer delays. 1256hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/UP3732-UP5516-CP-643-CP8760-142-Spicer-12-06-14-1256-200x150.jpg)

![Ambling their way west across the top of the Oak Ridges moraine, CP 2282, 3027, and 2259 lead T07's train, including a 400,000lb wind turbine generator load, through a spot I find most appealing near Raglan, Ontario. It's hard to tell from the photo, but the power is atop a tall, albeit short, fill across a small dell which opens on the north (left) into a bucolic farm field. I imagine this would have been the location of a temporary trestle during the Ontario & Quebec Railway's construction... the deep cut the train is emerging from would have supplied the material to make it's existence short indeed. 1118hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/CP2282-3027-2259-T07-Raglan-11-13-14-1118-200x150.jpg)

![In the wintertime, unless CP maintainers are using snowmobiles, this sign is honoured more in its breach rather than its observance (anyone recognize the CP tie-in to that phrase?) judging by the sled tracks one finds here every winter. Though the train will encounter the season's first snow further west, it's half sunny and pleasant here in the weeds at Burketon as a 400,000lb load out of GE in Peterborough trails two buffer cars ahead of T07's usual Unimin traffic. ![CP second 240 rolls alongside the newly extended east end of Spicer siding behind CP 8578, UP 8216, and CEFX 1007. The view here was vastly different a few short years ago, with the east end of Spicer being located back towards where the train disappears around the corner and CN was double tracked, as opposed to todays triple track. Had you visited last winter, you'd have found a temporary switch installed in the approximate location of the lead unit, however seeing as the new siding was not tied into anything at the west end, it was of no practical use. The chicane is also new, and likely in order to avoid a bridge pier. 1249hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/CP8578-UP8216-CEFX1007-2-240-Spicer-10-19-14-1249a-200x150.jpg)

![With Herzog on the headend and (unseen) multilevels on the tail, BCOL 4643 curves onto the 'new' Kingston Sub alignment at Bowmanville. New is a relative term, as in this case it refers to sometime around 1912! CN 516/517 (thanks TDS) ferry the yard / local power outposted to Belleville to and from Mac Yard (outside of Toronto) for service/inspection/replacement when they don't hitch a ride on 369 from, and 372 to, Belleville. ![Having completed lifting a pair of cripple stack cars (brakes wouldn't release, set out earlier in the week) from the Sabic Spur, CP 8211, 4657, and 3038 rest while the crew performs the roll-by of 608, powered by CP 8912 and 6003. It's not normal to have three units on the Cobourg/Trenton Turn, and I'm at a loss as to a reason why.
<br><br>
No matter, it's an interesting consist, and one that has representatives of two models that seem as if they may soon be extinct from the roster; namely the GP9 and the GP40-2. A handful of GP9's remain in active service, and though half of the GP40-2 fleet remains active, there were only ever eight. It's a nice touch that an SD40-2 trails on 608. 1843hrs.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/CP8211-4657-3038-T25-CP8912-6003-608-Spicer-08-09-14-1843-200x150.jpg)

![Heading up a long X371 made entirely of empty multilevels, CN 5443 takes the sweeping curve at Bowmanville, Ontario. 1315hrs.
<br><br>
The location is somewhat notable as being the former location of the beginning of the Goodyear spur that crossed over the 401 freeway on a 1981 vintage bridge to access the original spur, which included some interesting street and backyard running to reach the plant located just south of the downtown. The spur was deactivated in the late 1990's, the exact date or even year escapes me, but I recall seeing switch had been pulled from the service track by 1998. It's getting difficult to see now, with all of the foliage growth, however you can see a concrete bridge on the spur directly over the 4th multilevel.
<br><br>
Prior to the completion of the bridge over the 401 in 1981, the spur came out of the Bowmanville Yard area and crossed the 401 at grade... one of two locations between Bowmanville and Toronto where spurs crossed it at grade (the other being at Whitby, a remnant of the old Nip & Tuck). The Bowmanville bridge was finally removed in 2011 or 2012, concurrent with the removal of the bridge that carried the one time Oshawa Railway over the 401, about 10 miles west of here, which was abandoned in 1997 or thereabouts.
<br><br>
The lead unit is also somewhat notable in that it started life as Oakway 9000, the class unit of the 'power by the hour' fleet of SD60's. When new, the concept created a lot of controversy as Burlington Northern's shop craft Unions were vehemently opposed to the Oakways being maintained by non-BN personell at an independent shop, thereby cutting the Unions out of the deal and was feared to be the tip of an outsourcing iceberg.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/CN5443-X371-Bowmanville-07-20-14-1315-200x150.jpg)
